2011/12 New Faculty Development Programs

Made possible by the support of the Vice Provost of Faculty Development and the Office of Research, the 2011/12 New Faculty Development Series offers faculty a choice of two programs:

  • Thriving on the Tenure Track Seminar Series, aimed at helping faculty navigate the facets of the tenure-track and maintain balance in their service, teaching, and research
  • The Research & Publication Workgroup, a structured organization to support members in meeting self-imposed goals for writing and publication

Thriving on the Tenure-Track
Seminar Series

This seminar series includes a number of tenured and tenure-track facilitators and is designed to help faculty:

  • Navigate the tenure-track process
  • Prepare your dossier for reappointment, promotion & tenure
  • Create a research & publication plan
  • Goal-set & manage your time
  • Overcome barriers to progress toward your professional goals and work-life balance
  • Write successful FDC (Faulty Development Council) grant applications for research and travel
  • Develop effective, efficient and innovative teaching strategies
  • Harness campus resources and technology to make you more efficient
  • Develop a support network of colleagues outside of your academic unit and/or college

  • Saving Time with Technology, Feb. 14, 2:00-4:00pm (Paul Foster, Assistant Director, Instructional and Research Computing, UCit)
  • Making it Work: Using Strong Design to Visually Present Research, Feb. 23, 2:00-4:00pm (Darrin Hunter, Visiting Assistant Professor, DAAP)
  • Saving Time with Technology, Feb. 28, 2:00-4:00pm (Paul Foster, Assistant Director, Instructional and Research Computing, UCit)
  • All sessions meet in Langsam 480C. Lunch is provided for 12:00-2:00 sessions. Coffee/tea is provided for afternoon sessions.

 

The Research & Publication Workgroup

This program requires registration and attendance at all six meetings in order to maintain a focused and committed community of researchers and writers.

Facilitated by Lisa Meloncon, Assistant Professor,
Professional Writing, Department of English, McMicken College of Arts & Sciences, the workgroup is designed to help faculty:

  • Make clear progress toward your personal research goals with a view to creating a publishable manuscript
  • Create a set of reasonable goals with specific milestones
  • Develop strategies to maintain and/or increase research efficiency
  • Understand practical specifics of the writing process (e.g., querying publishers, findings the find place for your manuscript, how to deal with reviewer comments, etc.)
  • Recognize and manage barriers to ongoing productivity
  • Share tips and techniques for a healthy work/life balance
  • Create a long-term support community for new faculty researchers
