Call for Nominations: The UC Academy of Fellows for Teaching and Learning

The U.C. Academy of Fellows for Teaching and Learning seeks nominations by Tuesday February 1, 2008 of outstanding faculty committed to scholarly teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning.  The twenty-two member inaugural AFTL class announced in June 2007 will elect up to ten new members in 2008 for recommendation to the President and final approval by the Board of Trustees.

Eligibility criteria include

    * Demonstrated teaching excellence with significant and extended contributions to student learning and assessment and/or superior scholarship of teaching and learning

    * Commitment to work in support of AFTL goals, activities, and organizational needs

    * Membership in the faculty bargaining unit with at least five years of experience related to teaching and learning at UC.

    * Recommendation by active AFTL members for approval by the Board of Trustees.

No fixed quotas shall limit the representation from any discipline, rank, or college.

Nominations will be considered when made by any of the following:

·        college dean or academic unit head

·        three or more faculty

·        three or more students

·        two members of the AFTL

Initial nominations should include a

            i)  nomination letter

            ii) current CV

iii) statement prepared by the nominee of no more than three pages that describes teaching excellence, contributions to student learning and assessment, and/or superior scholarship of teaching and learning

Following an initial screening, the Membership Committee will then request additional documentation and may arrange for interviews or class observation for those nominees who remain under consideration.

Guidelines for submitting a nomination:

    * Find the link for the Blackboard organization “AFTL-Community” by logging on to Bb, clicking on the “Community” tab, and then typing “AFTL-Community” (no quotation marks) in the “Organization Search” box.

    * Clicking on the “Enroll” command and then “Submit.” The AFTL-Community should now be part of your listed Bb Organizations.

    * Prepare your nomination material as a single electronic file (either in Word or as a PDF).

    * Within the “Nominations” area, follow the link to pull up a page that allows you to attach your nomination file (see “Attach local file.” You will also need to add a word or two to the “Comments” section for Bb to accept the submission.)

If you have any difficulties with this process, please contact Wayne Hall (at wayne.hall@uc.edu).

   1. Honor:  Recognize teaching excellence and research on the scholarship of teaching and learning

   2. Service:  Foster the scholarship of teaching and learning and scholarly teaching that applies effective pedagogy and disciplinary expertise to maximize student learning.

   3. Advocacy: Cultivate an institutional culture that values teaching as a top priority and promotes pedagogical innovation, experimentation and assessment.
