About the CHI

The University of Cincinnati Medical Center has a long tradition of excellence in Biomedical and Health Informatics dating back to our receipt our first National Library of Medicine IAIMS grants in the 1980s. Growth in this area has been extensive in recent years, facilitated by significant infrastructure developments in bioinformatics, clinical informatics, as well as the addition of key faculty with expertise in various Biomedical Informatics domains.

Established in 2006 with the support of the Dean of the College of Medicine and the Director of the Department of Public Health Sciences, the Center serves as a home for Health Informatics research, training, and expert services at UC. Our faculty contribute their methodologic and domain expertise to the efforts of the Center and our partner organizations.

The Center is affiliated with other departments, hospitals and healthcare organizations around campus and the region, each of which provide real-world settings where our Informatics innovations and research efforts have their ultimate impacts on biomedical science and clinical practice. While the Center's primarly focus is on the sub-domains of Health Informatics concerned with clinical care, clinical research and public health, our faculty also collaborate closely with departments and divisions around UC and partner institutions that focus on other sub-domains Biomedical and Health Informatics such as Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.

Brief descriptions and links to more information about some of the Center's academic partners are listed below.

Academic Partners:

Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati

Member institutions including UC's University Hospital make up the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati. The University Hospital has provided the region, nation and even the world with high-quality, compassionate care, cutting-edge research and education for over 180 years. The Health Alliance continues this tradition today with innovations in Informatics including implementation projects including CPOE.

Cincinnati Childrens Hospital Medical Center

Researchers at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) work in domains related to Health Informatics. The Division of Biomedical Informatics located at CCHMC houses faculty with expertise in Bioinformatics and CCHMC's research informatics operational efforts. CCHMC Biostatisticians, Epidemiologists, and Outcomes Researchers and IT specialists work at the intersections of Healthcare and Health IT to improve the health of children.

Veterans Affairs Medical Center

The Cincinnati VAMC hosts resources including the leading CPRS electronic health record system. Researchers at the Cincinnati VAMC's have excelled in their work on patient safety, optimization of health information technology at the point of care, and healthcare quality improvement.

UC Physicians

UC Physicians is the private-practice group for clinical faculty at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. More than 500 physicians provide clinical services in all major specialties and subspecialties of medicine. UC Physicians is currently implementing a state-of-the-art EHR in its multiple locations across the greater Cincinnati region.

UC Division of Biostatistics and Epidemiology

This division of the UC Department of Environmental Health houses nationally renounded experts in Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Bioinformatics. In addition to being the home to some of our Center's afiliated experts, the division hosts the NIH supported MS in Clinical Research training program within which CHI faculty provide education in Biomedical Informatics.

Center for Clinical & Translational Science & Training

The CCTST is the home for clinical and translational scientists and trainees for the University of Cincinnati and its regional partners. The CCTST is leading a transformative effort to coordinate and deliver support and innovation across the biomedical and health sciences with the goal of advancing clinical and translational science across the Cincinnati region and beyond. The CHI partners with the CCTST on a variety of Biomedical Informatics efforts.

HealthBridge

HealthBridge is greater Cincinnati's regional health information organization (RHIO). One of the first in the country, HealthBridge was developed to facilitate exchange of health information between the region's distinct healthcare systems and providers.

UC Center for Surgical Innovation

The Center for Surgical Innovation at the University of Cincinnati was established to develop, assess, and disseminate new technologies in biomedical and surgical care.
