8th Symposium Pancreatic Disease: Clinical Update on Pancreatic Cancer

8th Symposium Pancreatic Disease: Clinical Update on Pancreatic Cancer

Course Description

The Pancreatic Disease Center (http://www.ucpancreas.org/) at the University of Cincinnati was established as a unique, multidisciplinary center providing rapid, state-of-the-art evaluation and management of patients with diseases of the pancreas. Diseases affecting this organ remain complex problems best dealt with in a multidisciplinary setting. New basic and clinical development abound, and, for clinicians in practice, there is a need for focused clinical update on this topic. We are pleased to present the 8th Symposium on Pancreatic Diseases:  Clinical Update on Pancreatic Cancer.

Goals and Objectives

The aim of this symposium is to provide practicing gastroenterologists, surgeons, and primary care physicians with a problem-based state-of-the art overview of current diagnostic and treatment options in pancreatic diseases with emphasis on the following topics:

·         Sobering statistics

·         Genetics and screening: Are we making any progress?

·         Clinical staging: Who should be considered respectable?

·         Surgical approaches: Standard of care at a tertiary center

·         Surgical advances: Can we do better?

·         Neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy: Why and how

·         Radiation therapy: What is its role here?

·         Complementary and alternative medicine: Expanding the box

·         IPMN: More than an imaging epidemic

·         Endoscopic palliation: What we can do now

As a result of participating in this activity, participants should be able to:

·         Develop skills to assess surgical resectability

·         Describe two surgical advances for panc.CA

·         Recognize the trials most crucial in shaping recent chemotherapy regimens for panc.CA

·         Identify three alternative techniques (aside from surgery and traditional chemotherapy) for potential palliative treatment for panc.CA
