Checking out NASA

During the fall of 2006, I was given the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream of mine. I got to move to Houston, Texas and coop at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC). I was placed in the Command and Data Handling group working on the International Space Station (ISS). I got to learn the ins and outs of the "computer" system of the ISS. I even got the chance to sit in mission control at my group's console and watch some pretty exciting stuff. I got a firsthand look at the unfolding of a 120 ft long solar panel, multiple spacewalks, and numerous other exciting things from in NASA's Mission Control Center (MCC).At NASA, the coops are permitted a detailed look at the cool places and people. I got a chance to see the Food Lab, Neutral Buoyancy Lab, Ellington Field, a Saturn V rocket, the shuttle cockpit simulators, full scale mock-ups of the space shuttle and ISS, the historic Apollo Mission Control, and the world's largest thermal vacuum chamber. I got to meet flight directors, astronauts, people who worked at NASA during the Apollo era, and loads of other prominent personnel.Cooping at NASA JSC was a thrilling experience from the first day to the last!
