Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum

While working at Perkins & Will | Eva Maddox Branded Environments in Chicago I had the opportunity to redesign the primary museum exhibit on the USS Intrepid. The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum is located on the 700 foot WWII era aircraft carrier which is temporarily in dry dock on Staten Island. Once the museum renovation is completed it will return to its permanent home on Pier 86 in New York City. The project has already gained much publicity with articles in the New York Times and an episode on The History Channel’s Mega Movers. The museum renovation itself has presented many unique challenges including how to design a state-of-the-art, interactive museum inside a porous seafaring vessel. The museum also had to be adaptable to allow for temporary exhibits and special events. Due the scope of the project I was also had the benefit of working firsthand with industrial and graphic designers. Most thrilling was the opportunity to work on a project that will be seen by millions of people each year and to restore a beloved icon, that honors our heroes, educates the public, and can be an inspiration to us all.
