At the Foot of the Rockies

My recent co-op at AMD allowed me to live in a very cool place: Fort Collins, Colorado. Voted "Best Place to Live" by money magazine in 2006, the area is full of outdoor activities, eclectic shops, and a laid back attitude. Luckily, I arrived here in the fall just in time for the Scottish Festival in Estes Park, part of the Rocky Mountain National Park. This festival included many feats of strength, the most memorable of which was the Caber Toss. In this event, contestants would run with a 20 foot long pole (basically a telephone pole) and then hurl it as far as they could. The Rocky Mountains are not only visible from my apartment, but are only about 3 miles away. There are many different trails to hike up the mountains and all of them offer astonishing views from the summits of the highest points in the U.S. Also only a short drive away are some of the greatest ski resorts in North America, and living nearby means I can carve up the nation's best powder anytime I want, avoiding the peak holiday times. The location of AMD's Mile High Design Center, not to mention the opportunity to help design the core of the world's next great processor, makes this an incredible co-op.
