Two weeks into my Spring co-op at Christie's art auction house in NYC, I learned that I would be assisting a video shoot featuring Gerard Malanga, Andy Warhol's main assistant at his infamous Factory. Christie's managed to get a hold of Warhol's 1963 painting, Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car 1) in time for their Spring Post-War/Contemporary Art sale and had invited Malanga to discuss the painting with their specialist, Brett Gorvy, in an exclusive interview. The experience was a whirlwind- not only did I get to learn how a professional video shoot is set-up and filmed, I had the opportunity to meet Malanga and listen to him reminisce about screen-printing with Warhol in the Factory! To top it off, that Spring 2007 auction of Post-War/Contemporary Art ended up breaking numerous records, and Warhol's Green Car Crash, estimated at $25-35 million, sold for over double, $71.72 million, after an intense bidding war!
