About the Cincinnati Sophomore Initiative
The University of Cincinnati’s
Sophomore Initiative (CSI) is the first among Ohio’s urban, public,
institution to structure a comprehensive program to serve students in
their sophomore year. Research studies show that second-year students
experience the “sophomore slump”: the term used to describe students’
academic challenges, lack of connection to the campus community, and
questioning major and career decisions. They suggest that colleges and
universities develop specific programs to prevent and eventually eliminate
the “slump”. The university is taking a proactive approach by providing
support to retain second-year to the University of Cincinnati. In addition,
this initiative encompasses key elements of UC/21 initiatives: Placing
Students at the Center and Forging key relationships and partnerships
while Establishing a sense of place.
The sophomore year is a time
when more students begin to consider or re-consider their majors and
careers while defining their personal goals. This program is an intentional
initiative to provide support to the unique needs of sophomores. We
would like students to become fully engaged in their academics especially
internships, co-operative learning, volunteer opportunities to enhance
their educational experiences. We want sophomores to become jubilant
juniors, successful seniors, and ultimately, gracious graduates.
We hope the sophomore year
is better than the first. Take the opportunity to meet a new faculty
member, volunteer at your favorite charity, and become an active member
of one of many student organizations. This is your university and home
institution for the next three years. Visit our website at www.uc.edu/csi
to take advantage of specific resources you should be utilizing during
this year.
Welcome to the Sophomore Year!
