A brief chronology of Chinese Students and
Scholars Association (CSSA)
(Former FASSPRC) |
The first group of three visiting scholars from the People's Republic of China (PRC) at
arrived the University of Cincinnati (UC) campus around January, 1979. There were mutual
help arranged by the visiting scholar among themselves and several families from the UC
community. Graduate students started to enroll in various graduate program from then on.
Around 1984, there were approximately 30 students and scholars on UC campus. At that time,
upon the suggestion of Professor Y. K Kao, a formal student organization,
CSSA (Former FASSPRC), was formed and registered with the University. The first President
of FASSPRC is Dr. Shihan Chen ( chemical engineering major, now works in
Mobile, Alabama). He is a graduate of Zhejiang University. Term of presidency is one year.
Following is a list of past official of CSSA (Former FASSPRC) along with whatever
additional information that we can gather about the activities during their terms.
- 1985-1986
President: Dr. Tiebing Liu, geology major. He was the first PhD
graduate return to China.
- 1986-1987
President: Dr. Zhiquan Yan chemical engineering major, (Dalian
Institute of Technology), now resides Charleston, SC.
Officers: Dr. Ting Yang, mathematics major.
Hu Huang, also served as VP of UC's international student association.
Dr. Jingzhong Wu, physics major, from Academia Sinica.
- 1987-1988
President: Dashi Wu, mechanical engineering, did not complete the term,
succeeded by VP Dr. Dong Li chemical engineering
- 1988-1989
President: Xing Ju, sociology.
Vice President: Dr. Dapeng Li, electrical engineering, (Beijing Steel
Institute) resides Cincinnati..
Officers: Dr. Yong Huang, mechanical engineering
Jie Yuan, chemistry.
Dr. Baohe Chen, chemistry. (East China Normal Univ.)
- 1989.4-1990.4
President: Dapeng Li, electrical

Vice President: Qiang Xiong, pharmacy major (Beijing Chinese Medical
College)

Treasury: Dr. Baohe Chen
Events: a tumultuous year. There were two gatherings at UC in support of the event June 4
occurred in Beijing. City of Cincinnati Government held a memorial service. A number of
association members participated demonstration in Washington D. C. and in Chicago.
- 1990-1991
President: Dr Puqi Jiang, music, conducting. (Nanjing performing
art?)

- 1991-1992
Rotating Presidency: Dr. Haiou Yao, chemistry
Dr. Xuelong Cao, physics
Dr. Liqun Cao, sociology ?????, mechanical engineering
- 1992-1993
President: Jie Yang, biology
Vice President: Xiaobai Wang, mechanical engineering
Treasury: Qiang Chen, computer science
Secretary: Chong Wang, medical school
Events of significance:
- Established membership, started collect membership dues, issued membership cards,
encouraging members' participation in association activities.
- Organized picnic at Huston Woods State Park. over a hundred members participated.
- Organized a tour to Columbus, Cleveland and
Niagara falls.
- Assisted ISO in welcoming of new students. Organized new year party
- Organized Lunar New year dinner party with door prizes, puzzles, cheese, and
dancing.
- With considerable effort by of association officers, FASSPRC was registered as a
Non-profit organization with obligation of filling income taxes.
- Tianshui Zheng of material science department died in an automobile
accident. Association helped in every way possible ways to help his widow. A fund-raising
effort by the association with the help of many concerned Chinese faculty in the college
was quite successful.
- A female graduate student in aerospace engineering was murdered. The association help in
her funeral.
- 1993-1994
President: Changjuan Zheng, resigned after one or two months, replace
by

Vice President: Dr. Jin Liu, chemistry.
Treasury: Dr. Zhengcai Bu, chemistry
Secretary: Dr. Shilin Zhang, economics
Officer: Dr. Qingwen Yuan, chemistry.
All officer were first-year students at that time.
Event of significance:
- Established email for FASSPRC.
- Organized Kara-OK competition.
- Organized bridge club.
- Installed Chinese computer system.
- Organized seminar on how to do interview. Published newsletters.
- 1994-1995
President: Bingyu Tian, aerospace engineering
Tressury: Ze Tang, left without finished the term, aerospace engineering
Sibin Lu, ESL
Treasury: Dr. Xuerong Li, physics, left in mid-term, succeed by Zhong Li, aerospace engineering, transfer to computer science.
Vice President: Hongwei Dou, education (communication disorder
specialty)
Events of significance:
- A medical school student Feng Di, committe
suicide. He was a graduate of
Tongji University.
- In collaboration with Chinese American Association of Cincinnati, the association
invited Central Symphony Orchestra to performance in Cincinnati.
- Organized about a hundred members' toured
Niagara.
- 1994-1995
President: Dr. Tuanmu Ming, Pediatrics (Beijing Medical
University)
Vice president: Zhibo Shen, nuclear engineering
Secretary: Liang Yin, mechanical engineering
Treasury: Weiya Cai, civil engineering
No significant event occurred according to Tuanmu, except showed movies brought by
education consulate from New York, organized seminars. He left office early for
unspecified reason. Dr. Y. K. Kao also resigned at the same time as the faculty advisor
after serving in that capacity since the inception of the association.
- 1995-1996
President: Yuxiang Wang, did not finish the term and was succeeded by
Qing Liu. Secretary: Jicheng Guo.
