Industrial Management

  What is Industrial Management?

Managers responsible for ensuring delivery of goods and services in every industry require an enormous amount of assistance and support because of the complexity of most production systems. Industrial management graduates oversee the planning, scheduling and coordination of work flow and processing activities to deliver quality products and services effectively and efficiently. They support other managers in finance and marketing functions to make the overall organization operate effectively.

A degree in industrial management positions students for such challenges, through education in subjects pertinent to direct supervision of tasks (line jobs) as well as support activities such as quality management, project planning and materials control (staff jobs).

  Success Factors

Industrial managers are individuals with strong technical and quantitative abilities who desire management careers.  Successful professionals in the industrial management field are problem solvers and have an analytical mind set.  Other attributes include:

  •  Quantitive proficiency
  •  The ability to identify and control risk
  •  Strong organizational skills
  •  Attention to detail
  •  Excellent oral, written and electronic communication capabilities
  •  Leadership skills
  •  Competence in decision making
  •  Capacity for teamwork
  •   Career Possibilities

The BSIM enjoys an outstanding reputation, and recruiters throughout the Midwest compete for its quality graduates. Positions offered recently to graduating students include production manager, manufacturing engineer, industrial marketing representative and purchasing manager, among others. Salaries are typically in the 90th percentile of graduates from the College of Business. Recently a Vice President of Purchasing at a major automobile firm commented, “The alumni base of BSIMs from Cincinnati is really strong. BSIM graduates from UC are in top positions in every firm in the automotive industry supply chain. We run it!”

      Majoring in Industrial Management

All students are admitted to the college as “pre-majors” for the first two years, transitioning to their desired major upon successful completion of the freshman and sophomore core courses with at least a cumulative 2.5 GPA. The freshman year introduces students to business concepts through the exemplary first-year experience program. All freshmen are enrolled in learning communities. Each learning community is paired with a Cincinnati company through "Project Fast Track" to allow students to apply the business knowledge they are gaining in their course work to a specific company. First-year students have the opportunity to meet with representatives from their businesses throughout the freshman year. Students are also enrolled in mathematics, English composition, general education requirements and courses from the global area studies requirements.

The sophomore business core of accounting, business law, information systems, marketing and statistics begins the exposure of all students to the fundamental business disciplines, in order to prepare them to communicate across the different business functional fields. The junior core, consisting of finance, international business, management, operations management and quantitative analysis, continues to give students additional skills in business fundamentals. Course work in the major begins in the junior year. The capstone experience involves a project through which students can tie together all they have learned.

The BSIM, which provides the operations management training to technically-oriented students, is one of the few undergraduate programs of its kind in the nation. This degree provides a unique curriculum combining engineering basics (mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics) with the standard business courses. Co-op is strongly encouraged in the BSIM program to provide the valuable work experience and the foundation for contextual learning.

      Minoring in Industrial Management

The College of Business does not offer a minor in industrial management. Students enrolled in non-College of Business UC baccalaureate degree programs may pursue a minor in business administration by following a specified sequence of courses designed to give them experience in the business fundamental disciplines.
