Aviation Technology

  What is Aviation Technology?

Aviation technology combines flight training with associated on-the-ground skills to prepare you for a career as a commercial pilot. While most of us think of pilots as flying passenger airliners, in reality they fly many types of aircraft for a variety of businesses. Besides pilots for the major and commuter airlines, there are cargo jet pilots, corporate jet pilots, and charter services pilots as well as those who fly pipeline and power line aerial inspection, do aerial photography and conduct sightseeing flights. Some pilots participate in firefighting, rescue searches and law enforcement. Some pilots become flight instructors.

Being a pilot involves safety, use of crew resources, knowledge of weather, navigation, and intimate knowledge of the aircraft and the mechanics of flight. Aviation technology ensures you learn these skills along with your flight training.

  Success Factors

You must be able to make quick decisions and accurate judgments under pressure. You must be able to maintain a high level of alertness while working irregular work schedules and spending time away from home. You must be physically fit, have excellent eyesight and be able to pass the required FAA physicals. You must also be organized and detail oriented.

  Career Possibilities

You can look forward to employment as a pilot in many specialized areas.  Opportunities include the following:

  • airline pilot
  • corporate pilot
  • charter pilot
  • military
  • law enforcement
  • aviation management
  • flight instructor
  • airport manager
  • airline dispatcher

  Majoring in Aviation Technology

Your training in primary, advanced and instrument flight will be complemented with two years of college general studies, a standard increasingly demanded by top aviation employers. You will study all facets of safe, efficient aircraft operation, including flight planning, weather evaluation and advanced flight deck technology. Courses in algebra, trigonometry, physics, psychology, economics, information management and data processing give you the knowledge you will need to advance in the industry.

As part of the program, you will complete the rigorous requirements and practical tests for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) private and commercial pilot certificates, with instrument rating.

You should be able to complete your degree in two years of full-time study. Due to the rigor of this program, you should plan on summer studies between your first and second years.

You should note that many aviation employers are seeking pilots with a unique mix of technical, administrative and organizational skills along with knowledge of business activities and interest in achieving business-related objectives. At UC, you have the opportunity to master these skills by combining your aviation degree with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from UC’s College of Business (CoB). (Aviation students can transfer 51 credit hours of pilot lecture course work into a bachelor’s program at the junior level.) If you choose this option, you should also plan on summer studies after your second year.

  Curriculum

This curriculum information is intended as a general information guide for students considering enrollment in this program. These online tools are designed to assist you, but are not a substitute for planning with an academic or faculty advisor.

If you are currently confirmed or enrolled, you can check your degree requirements online (http://www.onestop.uc.edu/degree_audit.html). If you are considering transferring to this major from another school use the Course Applicability System (CAS) (https://oh.transfer.org/cas/) to see how credits you have earned will apply to this major at UC. For course descriptions by college, click here (http://www.uc.edu/courses).

You should check with your academic advisor every quarter before you register for classes. Two years is really a short time to squeeze in all of your degree requirements. We cannot offer every course every quarter. If you miss taking a prerequisite for a required course, or don’t take a particular course the only quarter it is offered during the year, you can jeopardize your ability to complete your degree on time.

  UC Advantages and Special Opportunities

The Clermont College campus is on 92 wooded acres located in Batavia, Ohio, in the heart of Clermont County. We are relatively small and our faculty-to-student ratio is low. You will find our small class size and personal interaction with your instructors create the ideal learning environment. Parking is convenient and at no additional charge. Plus, our tuition is the lowest of the UC colleges.

As an aviation student, you will be part of a group of dedicated students who receive individualized attention on the ground and in the air. You will receive specialized flight instruction using an advanced simulator with visual display and learn from the highly rated aviation staff at Sporty’s Academy, the acclaimed education affiliate of Sporty’s Pilot Shop, the world’s largest provider of aviation educational material.

Your actual flight time will be logged in a fleet of fifteen aircraft, including a glass cockpit Cessna 172, the high performance Beechcraft Bonanza, the multiengine Piper Aztec and the Diamond Motorglider. (Additional flight fees apply.)

Additional benefits include the opportunity to participate in one of several professional internship programs with locally based airlines. In fact, selected graduates can work as flight instructors at Sporty’s Academy, logging flight time while continuing their education.

For more information on pilot licensing, regulations and medical examinations go to www.faa.gov/pilots/ (http://www.faa.gov/pilots/).

Call the Learning Center, 513-732-5228, with questions about programs and services.

  Admission Requirements

This program is open to all students with a high school diploma or GED and the desire to succeed in college. Although admission is open, students accepted into the program must meet the academic standards of the program to advance to upper levels of study.

As a first-year student, you will need to take placement tests. These tests do not affect your admission; however, the results are essential for your proper placement in classes. You must complete the placement tests before you may register for English or mathematics courses. All placement tests are given free of charge.

To be accepted into the aviation program, you must pass an FAA medical examination.

  Transferring to UC Requirements

You must be in good academic standing at the college or university you last attended. We accept transfer applications all year long and you may start any quarter, provided your transcripts arrive in time to be evaluated before the start of the quarter you wish to attend.

If you have not taken college-level mathematics or English, you will need to take the appropriate placement test.

To be accepted into the aviation program, you must pass an FAA medical examination.

  Changing Majors within UC Requirements

Other UC students may transfer into Clermont College by completing the application for change in college and program form available from most UC admissions offices (including ours, 513-732-5319). You are urged to see your advisor before transferring into a different major to minimize any impact on your degree progress.

To be accepted into the aviation program, you must pass an FAA medical examination.

  International Student Requirements

You will require a TOFEL score of 187 (computer test) or 515 (paper exam) if your formal education is from a country where English is not a primary language or if your documents do not clearly indicate your proficiency in English. You must also meet admissions deadlines, visa requirements, and provide documentation of sufficient funds before we can complete your admission. Please call Enrollment Services (513-732-5319) for details.

You will be charged nonresident tuition.

You should also note that UC Clermont College is nonresidential (no dorms or other housing is available), and finding local housing will be up to you. There is no bus transportation available to the campus, so you will also need reliable transportation of your own. It is possible to live in a dorm on the main UC campus and commute to Clermont College; however, we are 26 miles away and traffic can be difficult in the city.

To be accepted into the aviation program, you must pass an FAA medical examination.

  Graduation Requirements

You must complete an application for degree and receive a pre-certification from your academic advisor very early in the quarter in which you expect to graduate. You should see your advisor or Enrollment Services (513-732-5319) for specific information well in advance of your final quarter.

  Application Deadlines

UC Clermont College is an open admission campus. However, application into the program is requested by July 15; later admissions are on a space-available basis only.

You should plan to start aviation technology in the fall quarter, because the basic series of foundation courses required for this program starts in the fall and continues sequentially through the spring.

Financial aid takes six to eight weeks to process.

  Accreditation

The University of Cincinnati is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
