Program Description

The master's program in Educational Studies is designed for students interested in a social science & humanities approach to the problems of education. Graduates from this program hold a variety of positions in colleges, public schools, community agencies, and industry. This graduate program engages the learner in a dialogue with the various disciplines in cognitive psychology , human development , social and cultural foundations of education , and research methodologies . All coursework leading to the degree is offered at Raymond Walters College. Two courses are offered each quarter – autumn, winter, and spring – and additional courses are offered in the summer. Students who wish to complete a degree more quickly may elect to take additional courses on the main Clifton campus. Students may take up to 3 courses for graduate credit before deciding to apply for admission to the Master of Arts in Educational Studies program.  

Degree Requirements

Students pursuing the Master of Arts in Educational Studies must complete a minimum of 45 quarter hours of coursework. Courses offered at Raymond Walters College assure that a student will have credit hours in areas addressing cognitive psychology and human development, social and cultural foundations of education, research methodologies, and diversity. Courses are offered at Raymond Walters College in a 2 year sequence with 2 courses offered each quarter including summer sessions.  

General Requirements

A total of 45 credits must be completed for the degree

6 of the total credits must be diversity courses

Up to 9 hours are for a master's project or thesis

Academic Advising and Program Committee  

Students are assigned an academic advisor upon formal admission to the Master's Degree Program.  They work with their advisor to form a program committee that includes one or two additional faculty members.

* Diversity Course

A Culminating Experience is required at the end of students' program of study. Students choose one of the following options:

•  Written Comprehensive Exam: The written comprehensive exam is intended to examine the student's degree and breadth of content knowledge and ability to critically understand previously learned concepts. Questions and the exam format are determined by the student's Academic Advisor and other members of the Program Committee. No credit hours are given for this option.

•  Master's Project: The Master's Project/Portfolio is an investigation or developmental activity that is applicable to a specified setting, such as a classroom, school, or training program. Students may take a maximum of 6 credit hours for this option.

•  Master's Thesis: The Master's Thesis is an original research investigation that is made available to the university community. Students may take a maximum of 9 hours of credit hours for this option.

Admission Requirements

Students applying for admission to the Master's Program at Raymond Walters must submit a completed application form and application fees to the Office of Research and Advanced Studies.  Prospective students can access the application form by visiting http://www.grad.uc.edu/content/gradapp.cfm

•  A typewritten statement describing a) academic and professional experiences; b) immediate and long-range aspirations; and c) how the Educational Studies Program fulfills educational goals. Applicants must indicate in the statement that they are applying for the Raymond Walters outreach program.

•  A copy of a resume or curriculum vita with applicant's name, address, phone number, e-mail address, colleges attended with degrees and dates, employment history, professional experiences and names of references who will be sending letters.

•  Official transcripts showing all undergraduate coursework completed, including degrees granted and dates of degrees. To be admitted to the program, prospective students must have a Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.8 [on a 4.0 scale].

•  Scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken within the five year period prior to application. To register for the GRE, contact the University of Cincinnati Psychological Services Center at www.uc.edu/psc/testing/GRE.htm  If an applicant's first language is not English, he or she must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum acceptable score is 520; for the electronic version it is 190.

•  A minimum of three current letters of recommendation which address the applicant's academic and professional background and accomplishments. Letters should be written by college or university faculty, graduate advisors or other individuals who can address your accomplishments or potential as a scholar.

Financial Aid  

Graduate students accepted into the Raymond Walters Educational Studies Program may apply for a University Graduate Scholarship (UGS) that will cover 24% of their tuition. Prospective students apply for a UGS while seeking admission to the program and may reapply every year until the completion of their program.
