College of Arts and Sciences Entry-Level Composition Courses
(Including all Baccalaureate Colleges on Clifton Campus)
English Composition Placement Assessment will determine which course is right for each student.
Students can place into one of three courses, which will become their first English course.

42-ENGL-101B: English Composition I Bridge is a 6-hour course with intensive instruction in
basic writing and literacy skills required for success in college. This course emphasizes expository and analytic
writing and the development of skills in summarizing and analyzing texts. English 101B provides individualized attention
and tutorial assistance in a supportive environment. Successful completion of 42-ENGL-101B satisfies the English
Composition I requirement and qualifies students to enroll in English Composition II (ENGL-102).
15 ENGL 101 English Composition is a 3-credit/hour reading and writing course that is the
first of the three-course sequence (English 101, 102, and 103) required of most students (see
Program Requirements below). English 101 is offered every quarter.
15 ENGL 112 Advanced Composition is a 3-credit/hour reading and writing course that is
the first of a two-course sequence (112, 113) required for students whose placement essay suggests
they posses advanced writing skills. English 112 is offered only in the fall quarter and English 113 is

Program Requirements:
Placement establishes pre-requisites. Only after students have successfully completed English 101
may they move to English 102. Successful completion of English 102 is required before students can
take English 103.
The full English Composition sequence, English 101-102-103, is required for all degrees at the
University of Cincinnati except Engineering. Engineering majors take only English 101 and English 102.
Placing "Out":
Students can be exempted from English Composition in two ways:
- They present evidence of adequate transfer credit (determined by college advisors)
OR
They present evidence of having scored a 4 or 5 on the Advanced Placement Exam. Students scoring a 4 or 5 are not
required to write the placement essay and should register for English 103.
