College of Applied Science
Entry-Level Composition Courses

The English Placement Assessment determines which entry level course is right for each student. Students place in one of three courses which becomes their first English course at the College of Applied Science.

32ENGL097 Preparatory Reading and Writing is a 3-hour course designed to help students develop proficiency in reading and writing, but with the emphasis on reading.

32ENGL099 Preparatory Writing provides instruction in the basic writing skills required of college writers.

32ENGL101 English Composition I is the first of the three-course sequence (English Composition 101, 102, and 103) that is required at all University of Cincinnati colleges. It emphasizes critical thinking, reading and writing skills and introduces students to library search strategies in their majors.

The English Placement Process Establishes Pre-Requisites

Once students have been placed in a particular entry-level course, they are required to take and successfully pass that course before moving on to the next course in the sequence. Students must take the courses in the order of the sequence.
