Center for Access and Transition (CAT)
(Formerly University College)
Entry-Point Composition Courses
Center for Access and Transition English Placement Tests:
Students accepted at the CAT are required to complete two steps for English
Placement. CAT students will 1) take a Reading Test during an On-campus
Orientation and 2) write an Essay either during an On-campus Orientation, a Quick
Start, or an On-line English Essay session. CAT students will not be placed until
they have taken both parts of the placement test. Placement tests will not be
given nor evaluated once a quarter has started. The final placement testing date
for Fall Quarter at the CAT will be no later than two weeks prior to the
start of classes. Please contact Educational Services, 120 University
Pavilion, (513) 556-2481, if you have questions about scheduling.
Entry-Point Courses:
English Placement Assessment will determine which entry-point course is right for each student. Students
can place into one of four courses, which will become their first English course.
42ENGL 095 Preparatory Reading and Writing I is a 6-hour course designed to help students develop
proficiency in reading and writing.
42ENGL 097 Preparatory Reading and Writing II is a 6-hour reading and writing course at the
intermediate level.
42ENGL 101B English Composition I Bridge is a
6-hour course with intensive instruction in basic writing and literacy skills
required for success in college. This course emphasizes expository and analytic
writing and the development of skills in summarizing and analyzing texts. English
101B provides individualized attention and tutorial assistance in a supportive
environment. Successful completion of 42-ENGL-101B satisfies the English Composition
I requirement and qualifies students to enroll in English Composition II (ENGL-102).
32ENGL 101 English Composition I is an introductory college-level composition course focusing on
critical reading and writing. This is the first quarter course of the first-year composition sequence (ENGL 101-102-103)
required for degree programs.
English Placement Establishes Pre-Requisites:
Once students have their placement, they are required to take and successfully pass that course before
moving to the next course in the sequence. Students must take the courses in order of the sequence. All
students must have current English placement scores or have passed the pre-requisite course to be eligible for
English 095,097,099,101B. Students will be denied access to courses at registration or be removed from class if
they are not eligible for that English course. NOTE: Attempting to take courses for which you are not qualified
or eligible wastes time and money. It also causes delays that often result in serious scheduling problems.
Program Requirements:
The English Composition sequence, English 101-102-103, is required for all
students transitioning into other University of Cincinnati college. Only after
students have successfully completed English 101 may they move to English 102.
Successful completion of English 102 is required before students can take English
103.
Transfer Students:
Students who have successfully completed the equivalent of English 101, 102, 103 at another university may
receive transfer credit. Students should see their advisor.
Continuing Students:
Students who have been enrolled at any University of Cincinnati college, but whose English placement scores
are older than two years, must re-take the English Placement Assessment.
This includes both the reading and essay tests for students at the CAT.
