English Placement Policies
at the University of Cincinnati
- English placement is required for all students who do not have a score of 3 or higher on the AP
English Exam or appropriate transfer credit.
- Students will be denied access to entry-level composition courses at registration unless they have
English placement scores from the University of Cincinnati or they have passed the pre-requisite
course at UC. English placement scores must be current, that is, from within the last two years.
- Students may not re-take the English placement assessment within a two-year period unless they have
special permission from the English Placement Coordinator at their college.
- If students have taken the English placement assessment at any University of Cincinnati college,
their scores are valid for any UC college.
- Students are encouraged to take preparatory and English Composition courses in their own colleges.
(Students in baccalaureate colleges on the Clifton Campus should take English Composition at
McMicken College of Arts and Sciences. CAS students should take English 101 and 102 at CAS, but may
take English 103 at other UC Colleges.)
- Pre-college level courses (developmental courses) taken at another university do not fulfill the
English placement requirement at UC. Students must write the English placement essay at the
University of Cincinnati.
- Students may write the English placement essay online or on campus. Students are not permitted to
do both.
- English placement assessment is not used to exempt students from the English Composition
requirement.
- Students may appeal their English placement. See Appealing English
Placement.
Students who have questions or special issues should contact the English Placement
Coordinator at their college. See Contact Names & Numbers.
