Raymond Walters College Entry-Point Composition Courses
English Placement Assessment will determine which entry-point course is right for each student.
Students can place into one of four courses, which will become their first English course.
28ENGL095 Preparatory Reading & Writing I is a 6-hour course designed to help students develop proficiency in reading and writing.
28ENGL097 Preparatory Reading & Writing II is a 6-hour reading and writing course at the intermediate level.
28ENGL099 Preparatory Composition offers instruction in the basic literacy skills generally required of college writers. This is a 3 credit-hour course that blends reading and writing instruction.
28ENGL101 English Composition I is an introductory college-level composition course focusing on critical reading and writing. This is the first quarter course of the first-year composition sequence (English 101-102-103) required for all degree programs at RWC.
English Placement Establishes Pre-Requisites
Once students have their placement, they are required to take and successfully pass that course
before moving to the next course in the sequence. Students must take the courses in order of the
sequence.
PLEASE NOTE: Students will be denied access to courses at registration if they are not eligible
for that English course. English placement scores must be current. For Fall 2002, students must
have taken the English Placement Assessment no earlier than March 2000. If scores are older than
this, students should re-take the English placement assessment.
Course eligibility criteria:
English 095: English Placement
English 097: English Placement or C- or better in English 095
English 099: English Placement or C- or better in English 097
English 101: English Placement or C- or better in English 099 or English 100
Program Requirements:
The English Composition sequence, English 101-102-103, is required for all degrees at RWC.
Only after students have successfully completed English 101 may they move to English 102.
Successful completion of English 102 is required before students can take English 103.
Transfer Students:
Students who have successfully completed the equivalent of English 101, 102, 103 at another
university may receive transfer credit. Students should see their advisor or the Director of Intake
Services.
International Students:
International students who do not have a high school diploma from a U.S. high school must take
the Ability to Benefit Test before they can register for classes. The essay, which is part of this test,
will determine English course placement. Please contact the Raymond Walters College Placement
Testing Office to make an appointment. Phone: 745-5783.
