Nicole Grant – Exploratory Adviser

As an adviser for the center, Nicole Grant does her best to provide students with guidance and information about all the programs and options UC has to offer. She explained when students come in for their first appointment they fill out an information sheet then sit down for a one-on-one meeting called “taking stock.”

“The meeting allows us to know where the student is in the exploration and decision making process.” Grant says. “Some students already have a pretty clear idea of what they want to do, but want more information. Others may be undecided between a few options or have no idea what direction they’d like to take.”

For those who are still undecided or even if they have a few ideas, the center offers a number of programs to help students find information in the form of major mentoring, alumni shadowing, and externships. In addition to advising, students can also be linked to a variety of campus resources such as online assessments offered by the Career Development Center.

“I think it saves a lot of time if students are aware of all the majors available. If one major does not work out, I want them to know they have more than one pathway to get where they want to go,” Grant said. “We try to encourage students who are undecided to take courses in areas that could spark a passion.”
