Shawana Simms – Student Shadow

As a “client” of the Center for Exploratory Studies, Shawana Simms shadowed alumn Dr. John Brannan. When Simms entered the center, she expressed interest in the field of medicine; the center then put her in contact with a physician who volunteered to participate in the program.

Simms got a real taste of the daily routine of a doctor by following the physician around during several days at his practice. The student observed Dr. Brannan with patients and received a brief course in the use of some of the medical equipment.

“The time I spent with Dr. Brannan was an excellent learning experience that I took advantage of while I had the chance,” Simms said. “I learned so much within a couple of weeks. I was able to have hands-on experience with some of the equipment and tools. Everyone was nice and the patients treated me as if I were a doctor while Dr. Brannan did check ups on the patients.”

Shadowing may take on several forms between a student and a UC alumn. The two may opt to set up informational interviews, engage in phone conversations, or actually spend time together at work.

Simms says the participation in the shadowing program is important for anyone who is interested in a certain major or career or perhaps undecided between several careers. “I encourage anyone who wants to know more about their field of study to take advantage of the shadowing program. It’s something that you will never regret.”
