Umaru Bah – Mentored Student

Like many students who begin their college career at UC, Umaru Bah was torn between two majors. After visiting the center, she was introduced to a Major Mentor from nursing. The center paired Bah with the mentor after Bah expressed a desire to learn more about the nursing program.

“I was interested in both pharmacy and nursing, so I went to the center to find out about the requirements,” Bah said. She first spoke with a Center adviser who also suggested that she talk to a Major Mentor. “After I talked to my Major Mentor, I was able to make my decision. She told me about the nursing program, what to expect and how it would work. We had a lot of one-on-one time to really discuss things.”

Major Mentoring allows students who have an interest in a certain discipline to talk to juniors and seniors currently enrolled in that major. The program allows them to discuss workloads and demands of their chosen discipline.

Since going to the center, Bah has tailored her class schedule to meet requirements to enter her program of choice. She plans to meet her requirements and apply to the nursing program in the spring.

Bah feels going to the center made her decision an easy one. “I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who has a major in mind or may be between two,” she said. “The program shows you all the factors and requirements needed to make your decision.”
