All-University Faculty Meeting Minutes - May 10, 2005


  1. Approval of the minutes of October 20, 2004 

The minutes were so approved

 

  1. Report by John Cuppoletti Chair of the University Faculty Senate 

Chair Cuppoletti thanked all the members of the Cabinet for the good work they had done throughout the previous year, especially mentioning Les Vuylsteke who recently resigned from the Senate.

 

  1. Report of the Provosts Anthony Perzigian Sr. VP and Provost for Baccalaureate and Graduate Education and Jane Henney Sr. VP and Provost for Health Affairs 

The provosts gave updates on the achievements and progress towards the UC/21 goals for their respective jurisdictions.

 

  1. Nancy Zimpher President of the University of Cincinnati 

Dr. Zimpher welcomed everyone and thanked the Provosts for their presentations. As has become the tradition, the Provosts report at the Spring All-University Faculty meeting and Dr. Zimpher presents at the Fall All-University Faculty meeting.

 

5.      Chair Cuppoletti welcomed Andrew Burke and Dominic Berardi, the newly elected student members from the Student Senate, sworn in last Friday. There were no AAUP Board members present at the meeting.

 

  1. Standing Committee Reports 

There were no standing committee reports

 

7.      Chair Cuppoletti expressed sincere condolences over the recent death of long standing  faculty member Dr. David Sterling.

 

  1. Presentation of candidates for Spring Elections- Pat Mezinskis. 

Senator Mezinskis called for nominations from the floor: following the 10 nominations from the floor, the motion to close the ballot was passed. Senator Mezinskis announced that voting would occur electronically at the end of May. Also, those nominated from the floor would have an opportunity to submit a submission statement electronically.

Presentation of Faculty Awards

 

Chair Cuppoletti announced with pleasure the All-University Faculty Awards Ceremony, announcing that this year the Faculty Senate had added two awards for service to the University. Chair Cuppoletti thanked all of those who had served on the awards committees overseeing the nomination process and making the difficult decisions about whom to honor.  Chair Cuppoletti also acknowledged Faculty Senate secretary Thyra Jackson for all her work and help in arranging the celebration.

 

The Rieveschl Award for Excellence in Scholarly or Creative Works was awarded to Barbara Ramusack. Dr. Ramusack was introduced by Dr. Tom Sakmyster, Professor of History, in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences.

 

The Rieveschl Award for Distinguished Scientific Research was awarded to Jeffrey A. Whitsett. Dr. Whitsett was introduced by Dr. Thomas Boat, Chairman of Pediatrics and Director of the Children’s Hospital Research Foundation.

 

The George Barbour Award for Promoting Good Faculty-Student Relations was awarded to Howard B. Tolley Jr.  Dr. Tolley was introduced by Tom Moore, Director of Undergraduate Studies in Political Science at the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences.

 

The first Mrs. A.B. (Dolly) Cohen Award for Excellence in Teaching was awarded to Bruce F. Giffin. Dr. Giffin was introduced by Wan Lim, Adjunct Associate Professor of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy in the College of Medicine

 

The second Mrs. A.B. (Dolly) Cohen Award for Excellence in Teaching was awarded to Michael Romanos. Dr. Romanos was introduced by David Edelman, Director of the School of Planning in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning.

 

The first Faculty Award for Outstanding Service to the University was awarded to Carl A. Huether. Dr. Huether was introduced by Karen Gould, Dean of the McMicken College of Arts & Sciences.

 

The second Faculty Award for Outstanding Service to the University was awarded to Evelyn F. Brod. Professor Brod was introduced by Sally Moffitt, Associate Librarian, University Libraries.

 

Everyone was then invited to attend a reception hosted by the President in honor of the awardees.

The Chairperson-Elect serves for the year immediately preceding his/her term of office as Chairperson.  The Chairperson serves two years, followed by one year as Past-Chairperson.  The Chairperson of the university faculty shall be the presiding officer at meetings of the faculty senate (Article 1, Section 8)*
