Faculty Development Council (FDC)
Everything You Ever Needed to Know about Applying for a Faculty Development Fund Award
The Faculty Development Council is the body charged with distributing faculty development funds defined under Article 24 and the Memorandum of Understanding (M.5) in the Collective Bargaining agreement between UC and the AAUP. (For an electronic copy of the contract, go to: www.aaupuc.org.) This website will help you understand the guidelines the Council follows in making awards; best approaches to preparing an application; and the rules for utilizing any award you receive.
Requests for faculty development proposals are typically initiated by the FDC three times a year and are available only to members of the AAUP bargaining unit. Three types of proposals can be submitted: individual, departmental and interdisciplinary. Individual RFPs are usually requested in the fall quarter, departmental and interdisciplinary in the mid-to-late winter term; if funds permit, another round of individual proposals is requested in the spring term. Funds have also been allocated to universal providers such as the libraries to fund faculty training sessions. Awards are usually made within a month and a half of the proposal deadlines. Awards must be spent within one year of the award date, or the monies will be returned to the FDC for re-awarding. After completion of the work, a report must be filed with the FDC describing how the grant was spent and its impact on the awardee, other faculty, and students.
