On Saturday, October 25, 2008 the University of Cincinnati began the public phase of the largest fund raising campaign in UC's history. 

Proudly Cincinnati – Tower of Strength, Rock of Truth: The Campaign for the University of Cincinnati, set a new goal – to raise $1 billion to support UC’s vision of becoming the finest public urban research university in the country, usurping the previous campaign goal of $800 million.

UC’s last campaign, which ended in the year 2000, raised $329 million.

Prior to October 25, the university had been in the quiet phase of the eight-year campaign, and had already raised $454 million to be used for research, scholarship, student support and other specified needs. $196 million of those funds were provided to the university as gifts in the past year alone, to constitute the highest annual giving total in the university’s history.

In June 2009, Proudly Cincinnati topped $500 million, halfway to the $1 billion goal. In December 2012, UC announced its historic drive to 100,000 donors to charge toward the conclusion of the billion-dollar campaign by June 2013. When UC achieves 100,000 donors and $1 billion dollars it will position the university to be among the nation’s most elite.

Only about 65 other US higher education institutions having completed or are in the planning/operational stages for transformative billion-dollar campaigns, including the University of California-Berkeley, Stanford University, the University of Virginia and Yale University.

More than $200 million of the funds raised during the Proudly Cincinnati campaign will specifically fund scholarships and other student aid, including the endowment of a tuition-free musical theater program in UC’s nationally ranked College-Conservatory of Music, the implementation of language certificate programs in Arabic, Chinese and German for UC College of Business students, and will initiate construction of a new building for UC’s College of Law, just to name a few.
