Students to Realize Benefits of Bowties for Scholarships

The UC Community is invited to attend a special luncheon on Oct. 16 to raise funds for student scholarships. Attendees will receive an exclusive UC bowtie or scarf.

What do University of Cincinnati President Santa J. Ono, Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley and  Cincinnati Bengals player J.K. Schaffer have in common? On Thursday, Oct. 16 they will all be sporting UC bowties and scarves to show their support for Bowties for Scholarships: Creating Possibilities.

Bowties for Scholarships is a fundraising initiative that seeks to create more need-based scholarships for UC students. The Oct. 16 luncheon officially kicks off the campaign and will feature these and more local celebrities in addition to bowtie-inspired cuisine and entertainment. All attendees will receive an exclusive UC bowtie or scarf designed by a student in UC’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP). In addition, the tax-deductible portion of your luncheon reservation counts toward participation in the 2014-15 Faculty and Staff campaign.

“UC scholarship distribution is currently 75 percent merit-based and 25 percent need-based,” said Rod Grabowski, UC Foundation president. “I’m grateful for all the local community leaders and influencers for coming together to support Bowties for Scholarships and the creation of more need-based scholarships for our students.”

Those unable to attend the kickoff luncheon can still receive a UC bowtie or scarf by donating $57 or more to The Bowties for Scholarships Fund. The UC community is encouraged to spread the word about the cause by tweeting sophisticated selfies wearing the winning design to #UCBowties.

“Bowties for Scholarships combines a few of my favorite things: UC, students, scholarships and bowties,” said UC President Santa Ono. “I look forward to showing my support and hope the UC community embraces this great cause which will benefit our students.”
