New Herschede Society Honors Emeriti, Retired UC Foundation Trustees

15 members inducted into inaugural class

By all accounts Joan “Joni” Herschede was one of Cincinnati’s most selfless women. Before passing away in 2005, she gave back both her time, talent and treasure to numerous causes around the city, most notably to the University of Cincinnati, her late husband’s alma mater.

“I like anonymous gifts. Sometimes, you know, around Thanksgiving and Christmas, I just send things. People don't need to know where it came from. They just need to know that someone cares,” Joni told the Cincinnati Enquirer in June 2002.

Joni is the namesake behind the newly established Herschede Society at UC, a special group chartered to recognize emeriti and retired board members of the UC Foundation and to provide them a forum to remain engaged with the university.

“This prestigious society provides new avenues for emeriti and retired foundation board members to stay engaged and serve UC in meaningful ways,” said Rodney Grabowski, UC Foundation president. “Their institutional knowledge, generosity and passion are invaluable tools that ensure UC’s continued success.”

Fifteen members were inducted into the Herschede Society’s inaugural class on Friday, April 10, 2015 at the Kingsgate Marriott. UC alumnus and Cincinnati icon Judge Tyrone Yates was on-hand to make their inductions official.

Herschede Society members will receive exclusive updates about the university and foundation, meet with university leaders periodically and enjoy numerous opportunities to engage with their preferred university programs.
