‘Jezebel’ Sculpture Finds Home at UC’s DAAP

Thanks to the generosity of a UC donor, a sculpture valued at $90K has been installed to greet DAAP visitors.

A new attraction will welcome students, faculty, staff and friends to University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP).

Jezebel, a 20-foot sculpture made entirely of galvanized steel, has been installed on DAAP lawn on the corner of Clifton Ct. and Clifton Ave. The sculpture, valued at $90,000, was donated in 2012 by Dianne Komminsk of New Bremen, Ohio. Because of building renovations, it took two years for the artwork to be placed in its new home.

“I consulted with Jezebel quite a bit to find the right spot,” said Robert Probst, DAAP dean. “We are very happy to have her, and we’d like to thank Dianne Komminsk for making it all possible.”

The monumental sculpture was unveiled during an Oct. 23, 2014 ribbon-cutting ceremony at which about 20 people, including the artist Bret Price, attended. Price created the corkscrew-like structure back in 2003 and said the name was inspired by its shape.

“When I first made the piece, the sculpture seemed almost flirty to me,” said Price. “That’s how I came across the name.”

To accompany Jezebel’s installation, DAAP Galleries is featuring Cross Sections, an exhibition of small-scale works by Price. The exhibit will run through Dec. 9, 2014 in the Philip M. Meyers, Jr. Memorial Gallery inside UC’s Steger Student Life Center.

Jezebel is one of my babies and I’m happy she found a home here,” said Price. “She will live a lot longer than me.”
