University of Cincinnati Students Proud of Spring Quarter Proudly Pennies Progress

Students, colleges, community raised more than $58,000 for student-led campaign

June 7, 2010 – This spring quarter, University of Cincinnati students helped raised more than $58,000 – or 5.8 million pennies -- for the student-led Proudly Pennies campaign, putting them one step closer to their goal of raising one billion pennies by June 2013. Since launching Proudly Pennies in January 2010, students have raised more than $81,000, or 8.1 million pennies.

In large part, the funds were raised through two primary spring quarter initiatives, including the inaugural “Penny Wars” competition and the “Shiny Penny” Car Wash fundraiser held on Sunday, May 23.

“The UC student body, along with the entire community of UC supporters, really pulled together this quarter to help make significant progress on Proudly Pennies,” said Andy Koesterman, a student committee leader for Proudly Pennies.  “One billion pennies is undoubtedly an ambitious goal, but I’m confident students will continue doing all they can to gain the community’s support by helping them understand how important this campaign is to current and future UC students.”

“Penny Wars” was a campus-wide competition in which each college within the university competed to raise money for Proudly Pennies. Clermont College led the challenge, collecting more than $1,200 during the 10-day competition. The winning total was made possible by Dean Mick McLaughlin and Dean Emeritus Jim McDonough, who made significant matches to the College’s collections. Other matching donors included Cora Ogle, supporting the College of Medicine, and Dean Larry Johnson, supporting the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services.

In addition, UC students partnered with Jeff Wyler Automotive Family for the first “Shiny Penny” Car Wash to benefit Proudly Pennies. More than 50 students volunteered for the event, helping the campaign make a splash in four corners of the Tri-State, including participating dealership locations in Eastgate, Fairfield, Colerain and Florence.

Proceeds of the student-led campaign – contributed by students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community at-large – will help further enhance student life at UC by providing financial support for student programs, scholarships, services and more. Proudly Pennies is part of the University’s $1 billion Proudly Cincinnati campaign.
