Dr. James G. Stemler (Ph.D., University of Cincinnati, 1980) President of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for First Year Students, announced that the University of Cincinnati chapter has won the prestigious Order of the Torch Award for their activities during the 2007-2008 academic term.
The National Council annually recognizes up to five chapters from 257 chapters across the nation. The Torch Award recipients are selected on the basis of outstanding chapter work in programming, internal communications, campus visibility, and overall presentation of their application.
This successful chapter was led by Megan Barclay, who served as President of the University of Cincinnati chapter last year. The chapter advisor is advised by Amanda Jones.
Alpha Lambda Delta emphasizes that educated persons have a responsibility to “have tolerance in your dealings with all persons, generosity in giving to those in need, and insight into the feelings of others” says Dr. Glenda Earwood, Executive Director of the Society. Members are challenged to make a “meaningful contribution to society.”
This award-winning chapter at the University of Cincinnati participated and organized many events throughout the 2007-2008 academic year such as: the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, March for Babies, cards for kids and the residents of Scarlet Oaks, and Bricks Along the Journey for breast cancer research.
Founded in the spring of 1924 at the University of Illinois by Dean Maria Leonard, Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society that recognizes and encourages academic excellence among first year students. Today, Alpha Lambda Delta has 257 chapters throughout the United States and more than 700,000 students have been initiated into membership since the first chapter was started 80 years ago.
