The University of Cincinnati has over 100 Learning Communities of which 68 Learning Communities are led by Peer Leaders. Peer Leaders lead LC meetings twice per week and implement a wide array of activities and processes such as modeling successful learning routines, organizing academic collaboration among students, deepening connections to faculty and advisors, enhancing appreciation and knowledge of majors and professions, engaging in community service, and organizing social bonding.
Peer Leaders serve in a variety of roles: • Group leaders and facilitators • Individual Mentors • Learning Coaches • Connectors/Resources
Student evaluations of peer-led Learning Communities affirm students’ regards for and appreciation of Peer Leaders. Students rate Peer Leaders highly in areas such as demonstration of concern for students, dedication to building relationships, planning of meetings, modeling of academic success strategies, and knowledge of resources and opportunities.
For Peer Leaders, leading a LC provides opportunities to positively affect each student’s first year development and experience, grow and develop as a leader, and build relationships with students and UC professionals that may last a lifetime. Evaluations by Peer Leaders affirm that leading develops crucial leadership skills, enhances self-awareness, builds deeper relationships with faculty and professionals, and provides fulfillment as regards impacting peers and building relationships with peers.
