The University of Cincinnati General Education Program:

The components of the general education program include:
Baccalaureate Competencies
Undergraduate courses at the University of Cincinnati promote development of four Baccalaureate Competencies:
Critical Thinking: analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of information and ideas from multiple perspectives Effective Communication: competence in aural, visual, and language arts; use of resources and technology for personal and professional communication Knowledge Integration: fusion of information and concepts from multiple disciplines for personal, professional, and civic enhancement Social Responsibility: application of knowledge and skills gained through the undergraduate experience for the advancement of society Breadth of Knowledge English Composition: two to three courses determined by unit/college Quantitative Reasoning: appropriate level of analytical/mathematical literacy determined by unit/college Diversity and Culture: analysis and understanding of issues arising from individual and cultural differences Social and Ethical Issues: social/ethical reasoning from historical and contemporary perspectives Distribution Areas: 8 courses in a minimum of 5 areas (see expanded document for details) Fine Arts: dance, drama, music, visual arts Historical Perspectives: history and historical methodology Humanities: classics, communication, foreign languages, linguistics, philosophy, rhetoric, and courses not included in the other distribution areas Literature: literary texts and criticism in the original language or translation Natural Sciences: earth, life, and physical sciences; computer science; advanced mathematical sciences Social Sciences: cultural anthropology, economics, human geography, planning, political science, psychology, sociology
Program/major requirements (courses or competency determined by unit or major) Methodology: understanding of the systematic methods and history of the discipline/profession Capstone Experience: demonstration of proficiency in the Baccalaureate Competencies and in the content/skills of the program/major
Information literacy is integral to the undergraduate baccalaureate experience and permeates every component of the general education program.
Assessment of the general education baccalaureate competencies is a shared faculty responsibility at the university, college, unit/department, and program/major levels.
