2001 Four-day Field Trip

rafting in W Virginia
Eastern Kentucky and Central and Southeastern West Virginia

Sedimentology and Sequence Stratigraphy of Foreland Basin Deposits of the Acadian and Alleghenian Orogenies, Central Appalachian Basin

September 27-30, 2001

Organizer and Field Guide Editor: Thomas Algeo
Field Leaders: Thomas Algeo, Carlton Brett, Barry Maynard

Guest Field Leaders: Thomas Kammer (West Virginia Univ)
and Mitch Blake (West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey)

The trip examined the geology of eastern Kentucky and southeastern West Virginia. The goals of the trip were to:

• familiarize participants with the general physiography, structure, stratigraphy and tectonic history of the central Appalachian Basin

• examine in detail the sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy of foreland basin deposits of the Devono-Misssissipian Acadian and Pennsylvanian Alleghenian orogenies, including a proximal-t0-distal transect across the basin for the former

• consider the roles of Pennsylvanian coal deposits and the New River in the cultural history of central West Virginia, and how the geology of the field trip area has influenced patterns of human migration, settlement and land use.
