Volcanology

Professor Attila Kilinc and his group of students are interested in field, experimental and theoretical aspects of volcanism. Their volcanological studies use methods of mineralogy, igneous petrology, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics. They use field, experimental and theoretical studies to gather information, to test hypotheses and generate new data.

Within the past several years, Kilinc’s research group has focussed on the alkalic volcanism. Experimental study of volcanic rocks from the Mount Erebus Volcano, Antarctica; field and theoretical study of the alkalic rocks of the Haleakala volcano, Maui are examples of recent research.

More recently Kilinc’s research group began to work on understanding explosive volcanism. More specifically kinetics of bubble nucleation and growth has been studied experimentally.

Lab facilities include an internally heated high-pressure vessel, several cold-seal pressure vessels and a one-atmosphere Deltech high temperature furnace. Department has both XRD and XRF facilities. Electron microprobe, SEM and TEM units are available in the Material Science department located on the UC campus.
