College Requirements
Eight categories of general requirements provide the breadth in our liberal arts degrees, and the A&S faculty has identified specific courses that must be taken to satisfy each requirement.  A copy of this list is available in the Student Advising Center, 102 McMicken.  The eight general requirements are:

  freshman English
  foreign language
  science
  math/computer science
  history
  literature
  social/behavioral science
  humanities

All students enrolled in A&S must complete general requirements in courses offered by the college.  It is generally recommended that students attempt to satisfy these requirements in the first two years so that the junior and senior years may be spent on major courses and electives.

Of the eight general requirements, the first four (English, language, science, and math) are sequential.  That is, you must complete them by taking year-long courses.  The final four requirements (history, literature, social/behavioral science, and humanities) are non-sequential and you do not need to complete them in any particular order to receive credit toward your degree.

Credit Hours

All A&S degrees require a minimum of 180 credits.  These credits may be earned by taking general and major requirements plus elective credits. Specific details are available on the A&S Web site.
