Funding Opportunities

Scholarships in the geology department are available to freshmen and upperclassmen on the basis of academic excellence.  Walter H. Bucher Scholarships and Walter and Kathryn H. Cook Scholarships are given to qualified incoming freshmen and upperclass majors in geology.  First-year awardees are selected on the basis of their ACT and SAT records.  Each year all sophomore, junior, and senior majors are automatically considered for Walter and Kathryn H. Cook Scholarships.  Recipients are selected from among those carrying a 3.0 average or higher in their major field.  Awards are announced each year in May for the following Fall.

Summer Field Camp scholarships are also available upon application in writing to the Director of Undergraduate Studies.  These awards are designed to offset part of the tuition and expense of the required field camp.

The American Geological Institute (AGI) sponsors scholarships for minorities at both the undergraduate and graduate level.  Undergraduate scholarships up to $10,000 per year and graduate scholarships up to $4,000 per year are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.  Applications may be obtained from:

Director
AGI Minority Geoscience Scholarships
American Geological Institute

or from the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Department of Geology.  The annual deadline for submission of completed applications is February 1.
