Other Activities
Sigma Gamma Epsilon
Sigma
Gamma Epsilon (SGE) is a national honorary society for earth scientists. The goals of SGE are to help foster geological
research and knowledge as well as camaraderie among its members.
The Society invites students for membership if they have a 3.0
GPA in all geology courses, a 2.67 GPA overall, and have taken a minimum
of 18 quarter hours of geology courses.
Membership generally occurs in the junior or senior year when a
student has taken a sufficient number of geology courses to become eligible. Membership includes a subscription to a professional journal,
The Compass, and members are encouraged to submit research papers
for publication to the journal.
To receive more information consult the Director of Undergraduate
Studies.
Undergraduate
Research
Opportunities
for participation in original research projects conducted by the geology
faculty are available for undergraduates on an individual basis.
Research topics will vary in scope depending upon current faculty
and graduate student research efforts.
Time and skill requirements will also vary, as will the amount
of academic credit received. As
with all research, it is expected that students will seek to present the
results of their work at professional meetings and to participate in preparing
their results for publication. Students
interested in pursuing research opportunities should consult the Director
of Undergraduate Studies or individual faculty members in their area of
interest.
Grievance Procedures
All members of the University community
are expected to interact with civility and respect, recognizing at the
same time the unique tradition of the University to provoke thought, stimulate
discussion, and examine dissent. The University encourages the resolution
of complaints in a fair and collegial manner. To that end the University has established
a formal policy and procedure for redress of grievances by students.
Copies of the policy may be obtained from the College Office
(143 McMicken), the Student Advising Center (121 McMicken), the University
Ombudsman's Office (335 TUC), and all department offices.
