Exchange Program with Korea University
University of Cincinnati have a mutual exchange agreement with Korea University in Seoul, Korea. Please download the Program Description to obtain more information. Interested candidates should fill out the Application Form and contact Jill Winograd in IGSA.

British Study Program
Harlaxton, England plus additional sites, varying from year to year, including Ireland and continental Europe. Courses in a variety of fields, including Literature, Creative Writing, History, Mathematics, and Art. 3-9 credits. RWC Spanish Language and Culture
This study abroad program is a two-week intensive language, culture and travel program in Costa Rica. The pre-requisite is one year of university Spanish study or the equivalent. This course will be taught in Spanish and will concentrate on speaking fluency.. Please contact Deborah Themudo for more information or visit the Program Website.

Lucca, Italy
Opera Theater and Music Festival of Lucca. Up to 15 credits, including 5 credits in Italian. Auditions in January and February.

Munich, Germany
Intensive German language plus excursions. 6 credits. Contact Karl Obrath in the German Department.

Nantes, France
Open to Business and non-Business students; French-speaking or non-French speaking. Up to 12 credits. Application due April 15. Contact Susan Sadlier or Lee Armstrong.

Trip to Brazil
Every other June (next trip in June 2006) visiting Rio de Janerio, Minas Gerais, and Salvador. Open to the university community with credit and non-credit options. Contact Professor

Querétaro. México
Spanish language and Mexican culture for students who have studied at least one year university-level Spanish. Upper-level courses in Literature, Civilization and Business also available. University Study Abroad Consortium (USAC)
USAC, of which UC is a member, has programs in many parts of the world, including Western Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. Students may attend for 1-2 summer terms. Check out the USAC link or contact

Santorini, Greece
Nine-week Summer Field School in Sustainable Development in the volcanic Aegean island of Santorini. Undergraduate students attend classes and participate in workshops/studios for 14 credits. Graduate students do practical field training. The program conducts projects focusing on sustainable development planning under the sponsorship of the municipality of Santorini. Technische Universitat Ilmenau
Intensive three-week  German language, culture and civilization course (28 GRMN 261) plus excursions including Erfurt, the Wartburg (Eisenach) and Weimar.  Held at the Technische Universitaet Ilmenau in Thuringia, Germany. Limited enrollment.  Participants must have completed German 103 or the equivalent.  Contact professor Deborah Page for information about the program. 3 credits

Alcalá de Henares, Spain

Budapest, Hungary
The Budapest Semester in Cognitive Science (BSCS) is a non-degree program for undergraduates from around the world. Lecturers are established experts with international reputations in the variety of disciplines that make up the cognitive sciences. No pre-requisites are required, although this program should be of especial interest to students from computer science, biology, linguistics, psychology, philosophy, and physics. Edge Hill College, England
Fall or spring semester in picturesque Northwest England and at a reasonable cost. The college offers a wide range of courses of study, including Communication Arts, Criminology, Business Management, Languages and Humanities. Universidad del Valle de Atemajac (UNIVA) Guadalajara, Mexico. This exchange is best suited for students in Business, Journalism, Electronic Media, Nutrition and Engineering, who are fairly proficient in Spanish (300-level). Nagoya University of Foreign Studies (NUFS), Japan

University of Surrey, England
Fall or spring semester in Guildford, picturesque Southeast England, only 30 miles and easy train access to London. The program accepts students from any college, but has particular strength is Engineering, Business, Languages, Sciences and  Performing Arts. Ludwig Maximillians University, Munich, Germany.

Universite Catholique de Louvain. Study at one of Europe's oldest universities, which is located in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium (30 mins. from Brussels).  The city of Louvain-la-Neuve has a unique, pedestrians-only design, the focal point of which is the university. There are 16,000 students on campus. UC students can study there for autumn quarter, a semester, or the academic year.  The University is French-speaking, but offers business courses in English. For more information, access UCL's web site: http://www.ucl.ac.be/en/. University of Canterbury, New Zealand. This exchange program allows up to four College of Law students per year to study law in New Zealand. Contact Donna Nagy in the UC College of Law.

 

   
   
 
Short Term Programs

Short-term programs are often scheduled for quarter breaks and may not be offered every year. Here are some that have been offered on an on-going basis.

Literary Venice Study Tour
This study tour takes place during Spring Break, 2005 (March 17-25).  We will stay at the Pensione Bucintoro, where every room has a view of the lagoon and where artists such as John Singer Sargent, James McNeill Whistler, and Frank Duveneck painted from its windows. The tour is offered as a sequel to Venice in Literature, an Autumn 2004 course cross-listed as Topics in Literature (15-ENGL-201, section 001) and Venice in Literature (15-ENGC-580, section 001). That course, although not a prerequisite the tour, will certainly enrich the travel experience of students who enroll in it.  The study tour itself can be taken for three undergraduate or four graduate credits. Study in Italy
This program is for any student wishing to have an academic/international experience in Italy. Focus on music and art. Robert Zierolf. (June)

Chile Study Tour 04
This course is an on site experience of Latin American culture and history. We will spend 10 days in Chile during Winter Break 2004. During this time we will visit four important regions in Chile: Santiago, Valparaiso, Concepcion and the South of Chile. Our activities will include forums with local students, along with visits to museums, local companies, a coal mining town, local markets, a vineyard and other areas of interest. Study Business in Japan
This 3-credit study tour compares American and foreign management, marketing, finance, human resources and production practices. Cultural differences affecting business practices will also be analyzed. Contact Prof. Laurence Elliott or Prof. Robert Brinkmeyer for more information.

The New Berlin
The New Berlin, both a myth built on memory and an urban reality deserves the world's attention. This global field trip is an interdisciplinary course – German 174 – offered to undergraduate students from across the University of Cincinnati. Contact Professor

Contemporary Paris
Offered in conjunction with French 473 Spring quarter, the study tour takes in alternate years with Gothic Paris (next in June, 2004). The class and tour are open to all students and is taught in English, with arrangements for work in French for speakers of French.  Contact Professor

Gothic Paris
This program is for any student interested in exploring the mysteries of Gothic Paris. Offered in alternate years with Contemporary Paris. (Next in 2005). Contact Professor

International Seminars for Graduate Students in CBA 
The College of Business Administration sponsors a series of international seminars for graduate students. Locations have included Toulouse (France), Linz (Austria), Aachen (Germany) and Chiang Mai (Thailand).

Spring Tour to Italy and Sicily
March tour through Italy to study art and culture. The course is offered through the Communications Department and Romance Languages. Contact Nettina Eckert.

Study Tour to the Yucatán, Mexico
A program for Geography, other UC students and interested others to the Yucatán. Includes visits to archeological sites. December break. Contact Prof.

Geoarchaeology in Belize
Participate in an ongoing investigation of ancient Maya impacts on the natural environment in northwestern Belize as part of a physical geography field methods course.  Pre-requisite: introductory physical geography sequence or its equivalent as background for the course.  April - May.  Contact Prof. Nick Dunning.

Honors Literature and Study Tours in the UK: "The Gaze upon Jane Austen's Landscape."  June. Contact Barbara Wenner.

CBA Undergraduate Business Capstone. One week in Querétaro, Mexico, Spring Break. Contact Raj Mehta.

Habitat for Humanity. International Business elective in Costa Rica. Study operational differences and participate in service learning. Spring break. Contact Lee Armstrong.

Global Senior Design in Brazil and Mexico. For students in Mechanical Engineering Technology (College of Applied Science) during fall quarter. Students form teams with their counterparts in two Brazilian and one Mexican university, then travel to meet on-site to complete cooperative projects. Also open to Engineering students. Honors-PLUS

Honors-PLUS students are required to study abroad and experience first-hand the global nature of today’s business world. The Honors-PLUS Study Abroad Program is a month-long program designed to provide its students with the opportunity to:

  • experience first-hand the global nature of today’s business world
  • study with faculty native to the region being visited
  • visit with both US and foreign firms who are operating in the region being visited
  • discuss with US citizens working in the region their experiences while working abroad
  • experience the history and culture of the region being visited
  • become more comfortable with traveling and living abroad

Honors-PLUS students are also encouraged to participate in other study abroad opportunities offered by the College of Business or the University of Cincinnati.

Post-Baccalaureate Exchanges

These programs are for students who have earned a B.A. or B.S. degree, or higher and wish to participate in a teacher exchange program abroad.

CIEP places students with strong preparation in French in lycées or other schools in France. Participants serve as English language and culture informants. See the CIEP web page for information about their world-wide cultural mission or Assistants Etrangers for information on the Exchanges Culturels program.

Metz and Angers, France.
The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures places
graduate students to live in France for a year and to teach at the Université de Metz or the Université d' Angers, where they are part of the
English programs. The exchange student must be a native speaker of English and have taught for a year as a graduate assistant or lecturer in the RLL department or in ESL. For more information, contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Connie Scarborough, Connie.Scarborough@UC.EDU.

Japanese Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program.
The JET Program invites young college and university graduates from overseas to participate in international exchange and foreign language education throughout Japan. Participants are invited to Japan as representatives of their home countries, and play an important role in promoting mutual understanding between nations. As a result, successful JET Program applicants must have a strong sense of responsibility, a variety of positive interests toward Japan, and must be willing to adapt to a different culture and new situations. Program participants apply for one of two positions.  The Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) supports the English language courses in public elementary, junior, and senior high schools.  The Coordinator of International Relations (CIR) engages in international activities in local government offices.  Participants are not required to have any travel, teaching or Japanese language experience, and all majors are acceptable (the CIR position does require a very strong command of the Japanese language).  JET Program contracts are for one year beginning in July, include remuneration of approximately 3,600,000 yen per annum (roughly $31,000), and transportation to and from Japan.  Contract renewals (by mutual consent) are limited to two years.  The potential applicant must obtain a bachelor degree in June prior to the year in which s/he would be going to Japan.  For more information, please contact IGSA at the Institute for Global Studies and/or see http://www.jetprogramme.org/
