Atelies de Projeto Urbano: International Architecture and Planning Studio in Curitiba, Brazil

Venue: The city of Curitiba, capital of the Brazilian state of Parana, a metropolis of 2.5 million people designated by the United Nations as the most sustainable city in the world. The city has a history of 400 years, and is considered one of the most successful examples of contemporary urban and metropolitan planning, especially because of its environmental planning and management, its land planning, and its public transportation system.

Program:  This is the first annual international studio in Curitiba, Brazil, organized and sponsored by the Department of Architecture and Urbanism at the Centro Universitario Positivo (UNICENP) in Curitiba. Up to 8 students are invited to participate in a design studio on "Curitiba's Central Area Landscape Revitalization" in which you will work with professors and students from the School of Architecture of Barcelona, Spain (www.etsab.upc.edu), the School of Architecture of Bordeaux, France ( www.bordeaux.archi.fr), the University of the Republic of Uruguay (www.farq.edu.uy/z ), as well as the Centro Univeritario Positivo, Brazil (www.unicenp.edu.br).

The program starts in Curitiba August 28 and is finished September 8. During this program you will (1) be introduced to the practice of planning and architecture in Curitiba, (2) be exposed to international theories and experiences in urban revitalization, (3) interact daily with students, faculty, and professionals from Brazil, France, Spain, and Uruguay, and (4) complete a professional team planning design project that will be published.  Independent travel in Brazil is possible after the program. Expenses:  Students will be given housing for free (with local students) and will be given free tuition to the studio in Brazil and free entry to the accompanying international seminar. Your cost includes: your ticket (from $900-$1200), your entry visa (around $150), a program fee ($150), and your own food and personal expenses. You will be enrolled in 23-PLAN-605, section 002 “Workshop in Urban Design:  Brazil” for 4-credits in the School of Planning.
