THE HIMALAYA: A FIELD COURSE TRAVERSE ACROSS NORTHERN INDIA
During the last decade there have been major advances in understanding the links among tectonics (Earth’s internal processes), geomorphology (Earth’s surface processes and landforms), and climate change. These advances have led to several major paradigm shifts in the geological sciences and have resulted in exciting new interdisciplinary research.
Geology professors Dr. Lewis Owen and Dr.Craig Dietsch are collaborating to bring an integrated view of the nature and dynamics of our planet to undergraduate and graduate students and UC alumni by leading them on a field course across the Himalaya of northern India. With stunning scenery, extreme topography, and unparalleled rock exposure, the Himalayas are one of Earth’s premier geological laboratories. In addition, experiencing the culture of India — in many ways so different from our own — adds richness to the trip.
