Greece, Thirasia/Santorini - Summer Program in Sustainable Development

The 2007 Summer Field School in Sustainable Development of the School of Planning will be conducted on the island of Thirasia, part of the Santorini island complex, in the Cyclades Archipelago, famous for being the remnants of an active underwater volcano and the site of Plato’s fabled Atlantis. The Program has received an invitation from the mayor of Oia, the community/municipality in which Thirasia belongs, to develop the detailed preservation and development plan for the island of Thirasia, which has been declared an ecological and cultural preservation site. The final product of this project will be translated into a Presidential Degree by the Republic of Greece, and will become the law governing all aspects of future development on the island. The project will build on the regional development planning project completed by University of Cincinnati student and faculty teams in the summers of 2004 and 2005.

The intensive studio, course and internship 2007 program will be about seven weeks long, beginning approximately on June 8 and ending approximately on July 28.
