Andiamo in Italia

This program occurs in the months of June/July, with a
duration of 10-14 days.  Each year the focus of the study tour differs. This allows students to investigate a section of Italy. The learning process includes culture, language, tradition, geography, history, art and cuisine particular to the area. In past years we have explored:  Rome and Sicily; Tuscany and Umbria regions; the northern lake region of Italy. 

In 2006, we explore the Republic of Venice and its
conquests, in the days when Venice was referred to as the "Serenissima." Therefore, travel is done by ship, to some of the Greek islands that Venice conquered, which include Katakolon, Santorini, Mykonos, and Rhodes, with a stop in the southern Italian city of Bari, which was used as a command post for the control of the Greek islands as well as a visit to the city of Dubrovnik to explain the invasion of Venice into Dalmatia. The last 3 days are spent in Venice.

Students meet with professor on a regular basis during spring quarter and choose a topic on which to write a research paper.  Throughout the trip the students read their papers to the group in the region which pertains to the topic. Discussion and questions ensue; the entire group is encouraged to participate.  The actual experience of being there brings to life the work
they have researched.  Students also keep a diary in which they record not only the sights and travel experience, but also specific cultural moments
that they observed, or in which they were involved.  These observations are discussed openly in an informal setting held upon their return to the States.
