Lucca, Italy
OPERA THEATRE AND MUSIC FESTIVAL OF LUCCA marks its 11th season in 2006, and will run from June 11 to July 15.
Founded in 1996 by Lorenzo Malfatti and Malcolm Fraser, Opera Theatre and Music Festival of Lucca has quickly established itself as a comprehensive European study and performance experience for singers, instrumentalists, accompanists, assistant conductors and stage technicians. The five-week Festival is an accredited summer program of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), one of America’s foremost institutions for professional education in the performing arts. Centro Koinč, the distinguished language institute in Lucca, serves as a co-organizer of the program.
Over 100 young artists are selected each year to spend five weeks in this enchanting Tuscan city, the birthplace of Puccini, Boccherini and Catalani. Participants study and perform under the guidance of an international faculty of professional artists while daily Italian language classes, which are offered to all participants at various levels, are organized through the renowned Centro Koinč. Classes, lessons, coachings, master classes and performances are held in the region’s historic cloisters, villas, churches and piazzas. Participants have the opportunity to immerse themselves further in Italian culture by touring nearby art centers such as Florence, Pisa and Siena. Members of the European press and opera managements are annually invited to the Festival’s diverse offering of performances.
