Moving Out

1. When may I vacate?
You may vacate at your convenience.

2. My exams end August 30, I might not be ready to vacate 8/31. Can I have more time?
Provide GFH a copy of your exam schedule and we will work with you to schedule a vacate date.

3. Must I have an off-campus lease in order to be released?
No, you are not required to have an off campus lease in order to be released.

4. Can I sublet?
No, sublets will no longer be permitted.

5. Can I secure a short-term lease for the summer?
No, there will be no more leases issued.

6. How much notice must I provide GFH before vacating?
The required 30-day notice will be waived; however, we ask that you provide GFH as much notice as possible so we may prepare your checkout procedures.

7. What if I and my roommates vacate at various times of the year?
You will continue to pay your portion of the rent until you vacate.

8. Will the rent be prorated?
Yes, rent will be prorated; however, full rent will continue to be due by the 7th of each month.  If you decide to vacate later in the month, you will receive a refund based upon the date your keys are received in the Scioto office. If you plan to vacate on the 16th of the month and you have already paid for the full month, you will be refunded for 14 days rent.

9. Will my security deposit be refunded?
Yes, your deposit, minus any cleaning or damage charges, will be sent within 30 days to the forwarding address you provide when you checkout.

10. Why must I clean my apartment if the building is closing?
Even though you are vacating, others will continue to live in the building.  First, your thorough cleaning ensures you have retrieved all your personal belongings. Second, you are leaving the apartment in a condition you first received it. A clean vacant apartment is less likely to attract insects and rodents.

11. How will cleaning fees be assessed, so the burden does not fall on the last occupant to vacate?
We will continue to conduct apartment inventories after each resident vacates.  This information will be used to determine cleaning fees.  We have standard charges for cleaning the kitchen appliances, cabinets, floors, bathroom fixtures and floor.  Charges will be shared equally based upon the number of leaseholders.  For example, the charge for a dirty stove is $25. If the stove is dirty when the first roommate vacates he or she would be assessed $12.50 (based on 2 occupants) or $8.34 (based on 3 occupants).  The remaining roommate(s) will be assessed accordingly, based upon cleanliness status when they vacate.

12. May I take any of the furniture with me?
Yes, you may take your bed, desk, desk chair & lamp when you vacate.  The kitchen table, chairs, bedroom dresser and chest of drawers, and living room furniture may be taken and shared among roommates when the last occupant vacates, or before if an agreement is reached among roommates.  You will have the opportunity to identify the pieces you would like to take during the furniture inventory conducted by the resident manager prior to your departure.  If you wish to move the furniture a few days before your apartment inventory is scheduled, please make arrangements with the resident manager so he or she may record the furniture you are removing.  You will be asked to sign off on the furniture removal form for your apartment.  Only the furniture listed and signed for by you is permitted to be removed.

13. Will the university offer assistance in moving?
No, unfortunately we do not have staff to do this.

14. Will GFH provide a rental reference for me?
Yes.  The reference may be sent electronically to ucgradfa@uc.edu or faxed to 513-556-2324.

Parking

19. Can I retain my parking decal/privilege in my current garage after I move out of Morgens/Scioto?
A.
Faculty and staff that are payroll deducted can retain their parking in University Garage.  The other option is to transfer to another garage that is currently available (Woodside, Campus Green or Calhoun Garages).  For the current rate information on these facilities, please go to Parking Services’ website at www.uc.edu/parking.   Please note that CCM and Corry Garage are not available.  Your name can be placed on a wait list through the website.

B.     Students have the option of purchasing parking by the quarter or for the academic year (fall, winter and spring).  Summer parking is purchased separately since not all students attend classes during the summer.

C.     Students will need to apply for the University Garage as the facility they wish to park when applying for parking.

20. Can I be transferred to another parking garage when I move out of Morgens/Scioto?
A.
See above response for faculty/staff

B.    Since these facilities are not closing until August 31, any parking that students would have to purchase would not be valid unless a summer parking permit is purchased.  The summer parking permit would expire at the end of the summer quarter.

C.    Students will need to apply for a specific parking facility for fall quarter when open registration begins late May.  This is the way to transfer to another facility.  All decals to a facility are sold on a first-come basis.

21. When can I plan to purchase a 2008-09 parking pass?
All dates for decal purchase for Academic Year 2008-09 will be placed on Parking’s website within the next several weeks.  Any further questions, please contact Parking Services at 556-2283.
