Time Commitment

Many students interested to Go Greek! are concerned about the time commitment. "I'm in a demanding major," "I want to focus on my school work," "I have to work a job to pay for school," or simply, "I just don't have time," are common responses students give. While these are valid concerns, in most cases fraternities and sororities enhance a busy student's ability to balance work and play. The fraternity and sorority experience complements academics, career development, family, and friends.

Many current members of the fraternity and sorority community work full- or part-time jobs, co-op and intern across the nation, study abroad, and are members of additional campus and community organizations—all while seeking their degree. There are members of our community from every college at UC.

Check out the Resource Center for some of the things the Fraternity and Sorority Life experience connects you to: personal and professional development, academic support, service and philanthropy, scholarships, and more.

You can expect time commitments something like the following:

  • Weekly Tuesday night dinner and meeting
  • During your time as a new member, an additional weekly meeting or activity
  • May include volunteering for at least 1 committee, community service, or philanthropy project per quarter
  • Retreat once or twice a year, over a weekend or in the evenings
  • Many fraternities and sororities, rather than require you to attend dozens of activities, manage membership involvement through points systems for incentives
  • If you hold a leadership position, this time commitment can vary, anywhere from an hour a week to the equivalent of taking an additional 3 credit hour class. Most members only commit a couple hours a week to fraternity or sorority "business"
