The University of Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is a campus orchestra specifically for nonmusic majors and is designed to provide students with an opportunity to rehearse and perform orchestral repertoire. It is open to qualified instrumentalists as determined by audition.Founded in 2004 by Richard Wang, Nicole Desender, Alex Noel, Adam McCormick, and Angela Santangelo, the orchestra provides an outlet for all students regardless of major, as well as staff, faculty, and community members, to play in an orchestra at the university. Its members represent nine of the university's fifteen colleges; the three largest represented in the orchestra are Arts & Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. This diverse group of musicians meets once a week to leave behind science and computer labs, art studios, and textbooks for the pleasure of playing music. In addition to the main orchestra, members can play in optional small ensembles such as the UCSO Brass and participate in various community service events and social events offered throughout the year such as trips to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra at discounted rates and spring cookouts. Above all else, the UCSO's main purpose is to allow its members to have a lot of fun making music in a friendly and relaxed setting, all while still having plenty of time left to study, work, and enjoy college life!
