Course Description: This orchestra is specifically for nonmusic majors and is designed to provide students with an opportunity to rehearse and perform orchestral repertoire. It is open to qualified instrumentalists as determined by audition.

What kind of orchestra is the UC Symphony Orchestra?
The UC Symphony Orchestra is a full symphonic orchestra with string, woodwind, brass, and percussion (including keyboards) sections.

When and how do I join the UC Symphony Orchestra? Can I receive class credit?
We are actively seeking new members throughout the year as some members must leave between quarters because of co-op, study abroad, etc.

To join, send an e-mail to orchestra@uc.edu with your name, instrument, and contact information. UC undergraduate students are also required to register for the "UC Symphony Orchestra" course offered through CCM. This will give UC students class credit for participating in the orchestra and an easy A just for showing up. Students can register for either 1 credit hour or 0 credit hours for those who must avoid overload charges. The course number is 16 ENSM 191 and the call number is 803214.

Can the class credit count towards my UC Breath of Knowledge (BoK) requirements?
Yes! If you register for 1 credit hour per quarter, the UC Symphony Orchestra will count towards your UC's General Education Breadth of Knowledge requirements under the area of "Fine Arts." A minimum of three (3) credit hours must be earned to satisfy a BoK requirement, so participating in the orchestra for one full year (3 quarters) will count as one of your eight required BoK "Distribution Areas" courses.
What are the requirements to join?
There is no fee or formal audition required to join the orchestra, only your time and dedication. At the beginning of the year (or for new members that join during the year), the music director will want to hear you privately to pick the best program for the orchestra and assign seating order. This "audition" is informal and NOT like a CCM admissions audition.

Is the UC Symphony Orchestra open to non-music majors?
Yes, the UC Symphony Orchestra was founded with the expressed purpose of providing an outlet for those students not majoring in music to continue playing music in an orchestra setting. However, we cannot stress enough that the orchestra is open to all students, including music majors, as well as faculty, staff, and community members.
When and where does the orchestra rehearse?
Rehearsals are held on Tuesday nights from 8:00-10:00pm in CCM's Corbett Center, Room 1630. Dress rehearsals and sectionals may take place in different rooms, so please join the orchestra's mailing list for the latest rehearsal information.

I haven't played in months, years, and/or since high school. Will that be a problem?
No, that will not be a problem. Our director picks music that is appropriate for the specific abilities that each member brings to the entire ensemble.
I want to play, but I don't have my own instrument with me. Does the UCSO have any that I can borrow?
If you do not have your own instrument or don't have it with you here at UC, we can rent an instrument for you at discounted rates. Just let us know.
I previously played only in a wind ensemble, marching band, or concert band. Does that matter?
Not really. Some band instruments such as saxophones are not part of the usual orchestral instrumentation (though they are occasionally called for in select works), but we have many musicians in our wind and percussion sections who played in only bands and wind ensembles before joining the orchestra. If you've never played in an orchestra before, the UCSO is a great way to dive into the orchestral world and experience the fun of playing the classics. Be sure to check out our past repertoire!
