Don't worry, neither do we. But we can help!
First of all, you don't really have to pay anything. No, it's not a joke. SBC is entirely made up of college students who are basically all really
poor. You are not alone! You've found a great experience; you made it on a trip, now you just have to get it paid for.
It is our goal to teach you how to DO a service trip. A large part of any travel experience or service work is funding. Someone has to pay for it
(it doesn't have to be you). Yes, you are responsible for the entire per person cost of the trip in which you are participation. However, you
shouldn't be scared, you should be excited. Your trip leaders will teach you everything you need to know about raising money. This will give you
tools, resources, ideas, and motivation.
Here's what works. START EARLY. You have to get as many people involved as possible. There are a few strategies we have tried but no one will get
involved if you don't ask them for help. That means you have to ask everyone you know and probably some you don't. This is the time to network,
call in favors, and try everything you can. We'll give you a sample letter but it's your job to make it your own. Do whatever you have to do to
make poeple understand what this experience means to you, who you will be working for, the impact you will have, and the impact you will receive.
Appeal to emotions, be honest, and above all just keep asking. Then, follow up. Have conversations with people, don't be scared, and don't be
afraid of rejection. Not everyone is able to help but most will be supportive of what you're doing.
One thing to remember is to be realistic. In most cases, not too many of your potential contributors will write a check for $1000. Occasionally,
this does happen and SBC members have gotten contributions of even greater amounts. One strategy is to ask a lot of people for a small amount. This is the time to know your audience. If you're asking people who don't have abundant resources, you might ask for $10.00. If you get ten people to give you $10, guess how much you have!
Be careful, if you are specific in your request, many times people will give you that amount. you don't want to limit people. Some people will be
generous in ways you won't expect. Depending on who you're asking, it's sometimes a good idea to give people the big picture. Let them know what
your toatl per person cost is but don't tell them how much you already have (you can't raise too much, any extras will help out the rest of the
team). Also, give out the total trip cost, put the number out there, you just might inspire someone.
Your team will also do several fundraising events. Pas teams have washed cars, sold sandwiches to DAAP kids late at night, worked in Cincinnati
sporting events, sold bagels or baked goods, and much more. The sky is the limit here and creativity is encouraged. Use your imagination. Any team
money brought in will reduce the overall participant cost.
Above all, don't give up. It's your responsibility to make your trip happen so start early and be persistent.
