University of Cincinnati Cricket Club Match Report.
Midwest Match 6 against Shihab Cricket Club.UCCC keeps the momentum going with a 5 wkt victory! Scorecard
UCCC's quest for the championship continued as UCCC faced Shihab Cricket Club (SCC). Having played and won at Rhodes Park the previous week, the morale of the team was high. Shihab won the toss and elected to bat. This was only the second time UCCC was going to chase in this Midwest season.
VijayW and Chandan started out with a devastating spell. It took SCC, 4 overs to get off the mark. By then they had also lost 2 wickets, one each for the opening bowlers. At the end of 5 overs, Shihab was at 4/2!!!
SCC, then mounted a spectacular comeback much through Subodh's fireworks!! Subodh, a dashing batsman for the SCC, blasted the ball to all corners of the park. Pervez, on the other end, ably supported him. They batted in breathtaking fashion for the next 4 overs adding 43 runs in the process. Vignesh got the much needed breakthrough in the 9th over when he induced Subodh to play it onto his stumps. By then, Subodh had compiled a solid 41 out of just 26 balls and his innings was studded with 5 sixes and 1 boundary!!!! It was pretty much a downslide for Shihab after that.
Ram and Nagendra took over from RahulP and Vignesh and maintained the pressure. Nagi with his extraordinary flight, turn and control did what he does best: "N-A-G-I-ing" of the batsman. Ram wasn't left far behind either!! Regularly beating the batsman with sheer pace, Ram produced one which pitched a tad outside off, zipped in and "R-A-M-med" into SCC's skipper's stumps which went cart-wheeling!! Nagendra and VijayW combined to wipe off the tail by the 28th over. Shihab was all out for 114. A terrific bowling performance by all the bowlers. UCCC's fielding also needs special mention here. Electric fielding by the team was a big plus on the day with the highlight being the stunning catch taken by Chandan off Nagi.
UCCC started chasing 115. RahulP and Bijoy opened as usual. RahulP was out through a controversial catch at point. UCCC was at 0/1 in the first over. Without panicking, VijayS and Bijoy started taking quick singles and added a few boundaries. At the end of 5 overs UCCC was onto 21/1. Vijay was out trying to flick and was snapped up in the square leg region by the 8th over.
Vignesh and Bijoy continued to score easily. Bijoy was out LBW in the 12th over. Madhu replaced Bijoy but was immediately out through a catch in the covers. UCCC was struggling at 63/4 by the 16th over. Ram got out trying to hit the ball out of the park.
UCCC's confidence level was at an all time high and given that the total was too small there was little to worry about. Also, there was still a lot of batting to come. Santosh went in just when Vignesh started opening his shoulders to play some spectacular shots. Vignesh, who initially struggled, got back his rythm and started dealing with sixes and boundaries just as Subodh did earlier. By the time Vignesh completed a well compiled half-century, UCCC wrapped up the match in the 22nd over. Vignesh and Santosh both remained unbeaten. UCCC successfully chased 115/5 in 21.2 overs to get its first comprehensive victory when chasing. Vignesh with a good bowling spell and the match winning 53* got the Man-of-the-Match award.
