University of Cincinnati Cricket Club Match Report.
Practice Match 4 against Ohio State University 2 Cricket Club.
UCCC overhauls Ohio State University 2 Cricket Club! Scorecard
Less than a week away for the play-offs, UCCC was trying to get as much practice as possible. Ohio State University 2 Cricket Club (OSU2CC) invited UCCC much to its delight. It was a wet sunday morning with rain beating down on us almost all the way to Columbus. As soon as we entered Columbus, as though the rain gods wanted to watch a good game of cricket, the rains stopped. There was a lot of moisture on the pitch and the out field was wet and slippery. UCCC won the toss and elected to field.
The game started with Chandan getting a quick breakthough in the first over. Ramgopal complimented another quick wicket on the other end. Bowling was accurate with the occasional extras. The quick loss of wickets saw OSU2CC take a more cautious approach. For the next few overs, runs were scored off extras and quick singles. Vignesh and Ketan took over. Vignesh got his man hitting directly to Chandan at mid-off whose safe hands pouched it. OSU2CC was at 32/3 in 10 overs.
Majority of the runs were scored as extras, thanks to the bowlers. Then came the eventful 12th over. Ketan bowled almost 17 balls with 11 wides, and bowled almost all forms of bowling ranging from swing to pace to spin bowling. Shashikant took over from Ketan. Although jittery at first, Shashikanth struck a fine rhythm and started to get wickets at regular intervals keeping OSU2CC's run flow at check. Vignesh and Shashikanth were replaced by Manoj and VijayS who continued the good work. A late fight back by Hiren and Vineet saw OSU2CC finally reach 154, before they were all out in the final over. The highlight of UCCC bowling was a 5 wicket haul by Shashikant and "a generous helping" of wide balls by all the bowlers.
Having chased only once ...to victory, UCCC had a daunting task ahead. This was to be the acid test for UCCC batting. Makeshift openers Shashikant and Swapnil started. Beautiful square-cuts and leg glances and confident stroke play by both the openers saw UCCC make a steady start with 33/0 in 9 overs. Shashikant was caught in the 10th over. He made 14. VijayS started off slowly, rotating the strike along with Swapnil. An expansive drive brought Swapnil's innings to a close. He made 10. Vignesh joined VijayS and started attacking immediately. Steady approach and excellent stroke selection saw Vignesh negotiate OSU2CC's attack with ease, and with VijayS rotating the strike at the other end, UCCC was at 59/2 in 15 overs.
In a clinical fashion, the two batsmen picked up the pace. Consistently picking well-placed singles and putting away the bad balls saw UCCC score at least 8-9 runs per over. UCCC reached 100/2 by the 20th over. With only 55 runs to score and their main bowlers gone, runs were flowing easily. Vignesh reached his well-deserved 50 in the 24th over. With only 12 runs to score, Vignesh was caught trying to hit over the fielder, ending an 108 run partnership. VijayS, on 48, was caught in the mid-wicket attempting a half-hearted flick. Bijoy and Madhu with only 10 runs to score picked up quick singles before Madhu ended it all with a massive six over deep square-leg that looked like a shooting star ready to leave a crater on the ground upon impact.
UCCC secured its first victory at OSU this season with a well-deserved victory that was more like the statement that read .. "Play-Offs.. here we come!!".
