University of Cincinnati Cricket Club Match Report.
Practice Match 5 against Purdue University Cricket Club.
UCCC goes down against Purdue University Cricket Club! Scorecard
After a three week break UCCC was back on the road, this time to play against Purdue University Cricket Club @ Purdue. The weather was good and so was the ground, but the question that remained was whether UCCC still had it going without much practice?
UCCC won the toss and elected to bat. The Rahul twins opened and looked solid as usual. An edge off RahulP's bat broke the partnership and for the first time in the season UCCC had lost the first wicket in under 5 overs. UCCC was 15/1 in 5 overs.
VijayS and RahulM recovered slowly from this initial set back and started striking the ball well. Quick singles and well-judged strokes saw UCCC get back on track to reach 74/1 in 17 overs.
With 18 overs to go UCCC was on its way to a big total. RahulM, who until the 20th over looked solid, fell to a casual across shot. UCCC was now on the back-foot with 84/2. With more batsmen left in the line up, a comeback was promising, but was short-lived as both Madhusudhanan and Bijoy fell scoreless. The usual and undesired collapse was happening.
VijayW and VijayS now had the daunting task of stabilizing the innings and taking UCCC to a respectable total. VijayW fell to a catch in the slips in the 28th over. UCCC was on 107/5. VijayS followed trying to open up and was caught in the fine-leg region, but not before he had compiled a deserving 50.
Thanks to some good hitting by Shashikant and Ketan, UCCC reached a total of 148/9 in 35 overs. A respectable total, but around 40 runs short of what was anticipated after the break.
Better known for its bowling than batting, UCCC had its task cut out. Get quick wickets for less runs and put the opposition under pressure. VijayW opened the bowling with RahulP. Ridiculous umpiring decisions saw Purdue receive unnecessary runs taking them closer to the total. RahulP struck back with a beautiful inswinger to get the opening batsman clean bowled. A quick runout saw UCCC take the upper hand. At the end of 8 overs Purdue was at 48/2. Shashikant and Nagendra stepped in. Contrary to expectations, Nagendra was a bit expensive. But, an excellent performance by Shashikant ensured UCCC stayed in the race until the end. Shashikant got his first wicket in the 15th over. Purdue was now at 83/3.
Ashwin, a past UCCC team member, came in and with support from Virendra started attacking the ball. A quick 22 resulted until VijayW got him clean bowled in the 20th over. Purdue was now at 110/3. With only 39 runs to win, UCC was fighting to get quick wickets and wrap it up. But, indisciplined fielding saw the match slip away from UCCC's hands.
VijayW struck again in the 23rd over. In the meantime, Shashikant was bowling beautifully and got 2 more wickets on the other end. Purdue was 139/7 in 28 overs. Two more overs later, the match was over. UCCC had gotten its first post-season loss and a terrible reminder of the middle-order collpases and sub-par bowling that dogged the start of its 2003 campaign.
